Review
"Francis MacNutt's Healing is one of the two most important books I have ever read on healing. I highly recommend it." --Randy Clark D.Min., Th.D., Founder and President of Global Awakening and the Apostolic Network of Global Awakening

"Francis MacNutt is a pioneer in the modern healing movement. For decades I have learned from his wisdom, and I regularly use Healing as a reference. Francis writes and speaks with the unmistakable authority that flows out of a mature faith in Jesus. His tenderness and compassion for those who are suffering shines through every page. I highly recommend this book. It is a practical guide for how to pray for healing and a classic in the field." --Bob Schuchts, Author of Be Healed

"The most scholarly and comprehensive book on Christian healing that I have ever read.... It is a book on the love and power of the risen Christ." --Agnes Sanford, Author of The Healing Light

"For years, Francis MacNutt's book, Healing, has been a primary resource for teachers, ministers, health care professionals, and spiritual seekers." --Barbara Shlemon Ryan, Author of Healing the Hidden Self

The Definitive Work
By J. Miller
MacNutt has compiled the definitive work in Christian healing. Any church with or without a healing ministry would profit from a study of this book

Part one walks us through the usually explanations and rationale that a lot of people need as preparation for healing if they've grown up in naturalistic, materialistic educational systems. We need to be reminded of the plausibility that the transcendent God we believe in really does transcend. The only thing I might have found interesting that isn't included here would be a brief background of the philosophical foundations of modernity and rationalism, although it might not have been appropriate for MacNutt's intended audience.

Part two is an essential reminder of the necessity of faith and loving when it comes to healing. The book strikes a good balance between the theological, the practical, and the exhortative.

Part three is perhaps the most useful part of the work. It divides healing into four categories: forgiveness, emotional healing, physical healing, and exorcism. It gives careful analysis of each situation and practical approaches to prayer. I appreciate that when he comes to exorcism, he is neither dramatic nor shy.

Part four is a bit of a mishmash of last details. He gives twelve reasons why people may not be healed, talks about the presence of healing in the (seven) sacraments, and gives due consideration to the importance of secular medical care in addition to prayer.

Having watched a healing ministry be established and flourish at a church, I now wish retrospectively that this was the foundational text. Pragmatically, it is at least the notes on the growth of a healing ministry in a well-written, complete, and balanced form.

An engineer's approach to healing prayer
By A Praying Engineer
Francis MacNutt is an unusually clear-thinking and intellectually honest author on the subject of prayer. While he has learned from sources as diverse as Agnes Sanford, Tommy Tyson, and Jo Kimmel on the one hand and Paul Tournier on the other, his synthesis is his own. MacNutt's is the closest I have known so far to an engineering approach to prayer.

This volume is his most comprehensive on the subject of Christian healing prayer. He traces healing prayer back to the earliest centuries of the church; identifies the usual arguments against healing prayer and answers them in simple terms; and discusses the major factors involved. In Part Three he usefully divides the kinds of healing that we can pray for into forgiveness of sins, inner healing of emotional problems, physical healing, and deliverance and exorcism, and discusses the different approaches that he has found useful for each.

MacNutt warns against turning individual experience with healing into a general principle: "When universal laws are erroneously deduced from paricular inspirations, grace becomes law all over again," he says in the chapter on "The Mystery of Faith." Nevertheless, he does elucidate general principles that he has worked out from the multitude of experiences he has had over the years.

Chapter 17, entitled "Twelve Reasons Why People Are Not Healed," avoids the reductionism that many practitioners of healing prayer fall into. For example, he does allow for redemptive suffering and recognizes that while sin (such as resentment) can indeed trap us into a physical ailment, it is not always or even mainly the reason for sickness.

Harmony (The Club Girl Diaries Book 1), by Addison Jane

Harmony makes no excuses for who she is or what she’s done. For the past few years she’s been living as a club girl for the Brothers by Blood MC. The club girls are there for a purpose - to cook, to clean and to keep the men happy. She respects the club, respects the men and she follows the rules. Watching the men walk in and out of her life is strangely comforting, and a feeling she’s grown accustomed to. With a history of disappointments and false promises, all she wants is to have fun, play music and finish college. Being associated with the club, she can do that without having to risk her heart. That was until he showed up.

When Kit's father stepped down as president, he took the title with pride. The Brothers by Blood MC is his family, his home. Deciding to celebrate his new title with his brothers from a neighboring chapter, the last thing he expected was to find Harmony - a club girl with all the makings of a perfect old lady. The stunning blonde is beautiful, strong and fiercely independent. Harmony refuses to lower the walls she’s created around her heart, but the fire inside her and her love for the club fuel his need to have her by his side, and on the back of his bike.

When Harmony’s safety is threatened, Kit is determined to do whatever it takes to protect her and prove that she can trust him. But after a lifetime of broken promises, will it be enough?

Loved!!!!!

My Review on Harmony!
https://bookishsavage.wordpress.com/2015/06/06/harmony-the-club-girl-diaries-book-1-addison-jane/

When I first read the synopsis on this book, I thought to myself..oooweee this is right up my alley. Sure enough Harmony did NOT disappoint. It had everything I love in a book, drama, love, motorcycles, yummy men, and hot hot S E X. I love a good "claiming" session ;). I do have to say..it was a little more tame then I expected to be. I was thinking hard drugs, boozy parties etc etc, but like I said it did not disappoint.

We have Harmony an outspoken, tough, lovable, musically talented club girl. A "Club Girl" in case some of you are not familiar with MC club logistics is a girl who "entertains" these club members..basically shes a club whore/hoe/slut for all intensive purposes. Harmony is a bit different from the other club girls, she's respected and cherished almost by the members of the Brothers by Blood MC. She's the perfect club girl in their eyes, respectful, non-clingy, not full of drama, and not out to trap a brother for that Old Lady title. Shes used to men coming in and out of her life so shes not really looking for love here.

Then we have Kit, the new President for a near by chapter of the Brothers by Blood MC. He's the newly appointed president, who is well respected and followed by his fellow brothers. He sees Harmony and sees old lady material. More specifically HIS old lady material.

Without giving out too much Harmony and her bestie Chelsea are thrown into some drama by an outsiders. Her local club prez Optimus and Mr. Hottie McNewPrez Kit come in and figure out ways to keep the girls safe. There's betrayal, trust issues, kidnapping, rescue missions, death, sadness, music and sex sex sex...everything a great MC book needs. OH! One warning..there is a CLIFFHANGER in the book (rawrrrr)...but it doesn't involve Harm...so no worries! ;)

I give this book 5

I can not wait till the next book in the series come out!!

It seems like it was written in one go and then not ...
By Amazon Customer
With the tense changes, grammatical errors, and typos I just couldn't finish it. It seems like it was written in one go and then not edited, which is unfortunate because I enjoyed the story. The sex scenes are really hot too! if you can get past the poor writing and ignore blaring errors then go ahead and give this book a read, even if it's just for the sex.

This book is good.
By Helen
This book is good. The plot is good. The characters are good. The sex is good. This book is good and that is the problem. It somehow, in a way I have trouble putting my finger on, just falls short of being great. There really isn't anything I particularly dislike but it lacks a special spark for me. I think this is the perfect book to read if you only have small increments to read. This will keep you entertained but not tempt you to put off your work or stay up too late to keep reading. I think I am going to pass on the next.

From the PEN/Faulkner finalist and critically acclaimed author of Hold It ’Til It Hurts comes a dark and socially provocative Southern-fried comedy about four UC Berkeley students who stage a dramatic protest during a Civil War reenactment—a fierce, funny, tragic work from a bold new writer.

Welcome to Braggsville. The City that Love Built in the Heart of Georgia. Population 712

Born and raised in the heart of old Dixie, D’aron Davenport finds himself in unfamiliar territory his freshman year at UC Berkeley. Two thousand miles and a world away from his childhood, he is a small-town fish floundering in the depths of a large, hyper-liberal pond. Caught between the prosaic values of his rural hometown and the intellectualized multicultural cosmopolitanism of Berzerkeley, the nineteen-year-old white kid is uncertain about his place until one disastrous party brings him three idiosyncratic best friends: Louis, a “kung-fu comedian" from California; Candice, an earnest do-gooder claiming Native roots from Iowa; and Charlie, an introspective inner-city black teen from Chicago. They dub themselves the “4 Little Indians.”

But everything changes in the group’s alternative history class, when D’aron lets slip that his hometown hosts an annual Civil War reenactment, recently rebranded “Patriot Days.” His announcement is met with righteous indignation, and inspires Candice to suggest a “performative intervention” to protest the reenactment. Armed with youthful self-importance, makeshift slave costumes, righteous zeal, and their own misguided ideas about the South, the 4 Little Indians descend on Braggsville. Their journey through backwoods churches, backroom politics, Waffle Houses, and drunken family barbecues is uproarious to start, but will have devastating consequences.

With the keen wit of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and the deft argot of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, T. Geronimo Johnson has written an astonishing, razor-sharp satire. Using a panoply of styles and tones, from tragicomic to Southern Gothic, he skewers issues of class, race, intellectual and political chauvinism, Obamaism, social media, and much more.

A literary coming-of-age novel for a new generation, written with tremendous social insight and a unique, generous heart, Welcome to Braggsville reminds us of the promise and perils of youthful exuberance, while painting an indelible portrait of contemporary America.

Review
“Great American writers whose names came to mind as I was reading Welcome to Braggsville: Tom Wolfe, Mark Twain, Toni Morrison, H.L. Mencken, Don DeLillo, David Foster Wallace, Norman Mailer and Ralph Ellison. Johnson’s timely novel is a tipsy social satire . . . a tour de force.” (NPR's Fresh Air)

“A rollicking satire . . . Radical, hilarious, tragic, and all too relevant.” (O Magazine)

“Johnson’s writing is often brilliantly comic, and Braggsville is a welcome new kind of southern novel.” (Time, Top 10 Books of 2015)

“A stunning achievement with no clear literary precedent. Welcome to Braggsville . . . is one of the most searing, shocking looks at racial issues and campus activism in a long time.” (Men’s Journal, Best Books of 2015)

“The most dazzling, most unsettling, most oh-my-God-listen-up novel you’ll read this year. T. Geronimo Johnson plays cultural criticism like it’s acid jazz. His shockingly funny story pricks every nerve of the American body politic. Welcome to Braggsville. It’s about time.” (The Washington Post)

“Reading this novel is not unlike listening to an erudite satirist play the dozens in a marathon performance . . . Organic, plucky, smart, Welcome to Braggsville is the funniest sendup of identity politics, the academy and white racial anxiety to hit the scene in years.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Audacious, unpredictable, exuberant and even tragic, in the most classic meaning of the word . . . A heady mix of satire and hyperbole. At times, Welcome to Braggsville reads like a literary hybrid of David Foster Wallace and Colson Whitehead.” (Los Angeles Times Book Review)

“The unsettling racial satire America needs right now . . . Welcome to Braggsville doesn’t offer easy polemic or easier sentimentality, but a deep dive into the American race problem as muddled, terrifying, and absurd as the reality.” (Huffington Post)

“You must read T. Geronimo Johnson. He is awesome.” (Sherman Alexie via Twitter)

“Ghastly and funny and gloriously provocative . . . Johnson’s prose is by turns scathing dark humor, soaring lyricism, and a quietly devastating analysis of every species of injustice. The result is a kind of mind-melting poetry—a linguistic electroconvulsive therapy for the reader. This book will wake you up!” (Karen Russell, bestselling author of Swamplandia!, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize)

“Transcendence is what Geronimo Johnson achieves in this remarkable novel. Every racial assumption is both acknowledged and challenged in ways at times hilarious, at other times poignant. Welcome to Braggsville is ambitious, wise, and brave.” (Ron Rash, bestselling author of Serena)

“As daring a literary high-wire act as has come along in some time. . . . frequently and unabashedly funny . . . [A] volatile mix of stinging satire, linguistic pyrotechnics and heartbreaking narrative.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Full of virtuosic sentences and coruscating satire . . . a brilliant and necessary read.” (Buzzfeed, Best Books of 2015)

“Biting, clever . . . Following four Berkeley students bent on a bit of guerrilla theater at a Civil War re-enactment in Georgia, Geronimo Johnson never runs out of targets for his satirical pen, from Old South apologists to solipsistic students in the grip of self-righteous political correctness.” (The Daily Beast, Best Fiction of 2015)

Welcome to Braggsville is a comic, rollicking, and biting story about the cultural clash between the rural South and a bastion of contemporary politically sensitive liberalism.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“Both funny and frightful . . . But as 21st-century American culture crisscrosses with the nation’s history, Johnson’s story evokes more than satirical humor. A sense of conscience and moral purpose takes shape at the heart of the book.” (Associated Press)

“Stunning and poignant . . . Johnson’s novel may not have the answer to the problems he’s addressing, [but] it’s clear that he’s asking the right questions.” (LA Review of Books)

“Southern Gothic meets West Coast political correctness with hilarious results in Johnson’s new satirical novel. . . . An odyssey through Waffle Houses, evangelical churches and backyard barbecue’s ensues, with attitudes about everything from race to social media getting skewered.” (New York Post)

“Geronimo Johnson is a fearless and driven young writer of dazzling gifts. His books map American multiculture as a poignant and twisted human comedy in which nobody comes out clean. . . . surprising, heartbreaking, tragicomic, and deeply disturbing.” (Jaimy Gordon, National Book Award-winning author of Lord of Misrule)

“Combines Ben Fountain’s steely political eye, Junot Diaz’s pop-infused dogma, and Toni Morrison’s sense of social justice through historical reckoning. Big, shiny literary prizes were created for books like this one.” (Wiley Cash, bestselling author of A Land More Kind Than Home)

“One of the most invigorating and least predictable novels of the year.” (Kevin Brockmeier, award-winning author of The Brief History of the Dead)

“Combines the intellectual urgency of a satire with the emotional resonance of a tragedy. Welcome to Braggsville is as smart as it is subversive, and as bleakly hilarious as it is deeply necessary.” (Jennifer duBois, award-winning author of A Partial History of Lost Causes)

“DeLilloesque for its orgiastic pop-culture roiling. This is a virtuoso performance by one of our strongest new voices.” (Richard Katrovas, award-winning poet and author of Scorpio Rising)

“Madcap, satirical, sometimes profane and uncanny . . . Welcome to Braggsville is a deeply pleasurable read for the sheer wonder of Johnson’s prose, but a deeply disturbing read for the truth it reveals about us.” (BookPage)

“Brilliant, wildly satirical, and also deeply sobering. The story looms larger than life. At every turn, the impasses Johnson shows us are our own.” (Tess Taylor, award-winning poet and author of The Forage House)

A disappointment
By Carl Matthes
Upon a recommendation from an aspiring writer, I purchased Braggsville. It was disappointing. I forced myself to keep reading, but finally just closed the book since I didn't really care about the characters or what became a burdensome story line. Author Johnson's writing style became a barrier - even with his list of definitions - to the flow and the rise and fall of the line. Cleverness in turning a phrase is a definite talent, turning and turning a phrase or using cutesy words and elongated sentences - which fall into the category of COIK (clear only if known) - defeats his writing.

A small-town Southern kid brings his Berkeley friends home to see the Civil War reenactment. What could go wrong??
By I Know What You Should Read
The fictional Braggsville, Georgia, population 712, is reminiscent of Wilcox County, Georgia (where they held the first integrated prom just two years ago). But, in Braggsville, there are still segregated proms. Every year, there is a festival called the Pride Week Patriot Days Festival, the highlight of which is a Civil War battle reenactment (not that anyone refers to it as the Civil War, of course). Black people live in the Gully; white people live on the other side of the Holler. Confederate flags and black lawn jockeys decorate houses. At local general stores, you can pick up bumper stickers with tasteful slogans like “IF YOU’RE ANY ‘CAN, EXCEPT AMERI-CAN—GO HOME” and “IF I’D KNOWN IT WOULD BE LIKE THIS, I WOULD HAVE PICKED MY OWN COTTON” and “KEEP HONKING—I’M RELOADING.”

D’aron Davenport is a white kid from Braggsville. He’s a vegetarian who gave up hunting (blasphemous in Braggsville!), and who feels “ready to be released into society.” He also happens to be the valedictorian of his class, so, upon graduation from high school, he escapes to Berkeley (“Berzerkely”).

Berkeley and Braggsville are, of course, as different as can be, and D’aron struggles to find his footing. But soon, at a party, he meets the three people who become his best friends. Along with D’aron, they call themselves the “4 Little Indians”: Louis (a Malaysian wannabe stand-up comedian whose stage name is Lenny Bruce Lee), Candice (a staunch and earnest liberal, Midwestern white girl with dreadlocks . . . who claims to be one-eighth Native American), and Charlie (a black dude from inner-city Chicago who went to a rich boarding school on a football scholarship).

During the fall of their sophomore year, the 4 Little Indians decide to take a class together: American History X, Y, and Z: Alternative Perspectives. On Fridays over lunch, the class meets for Salon de Chat, “an informal class with the tagline: People who don’t know their history are doomed to eat it!” The desks are arranged in four-tops, and the professor provides several discussion topics to cover over lunch. At one such Salon, D’aron mentions that his town hosts an annual festival that features a Civil War reenactment. His classmates are dumbfounded: "The table was shocked. The entire class in fact. They’d heard tell of Civil War reenactments, but they were still occurring? The War Between the States was another time and another country. As was the South. Are barbers still surgeons? Is there still sharecropping? What about indoor plumbing?"

But then Candice has an idea, and the 4 Little Indians hatch a plan. They will travel to Braggsville for spring break (which happens to coincide with the annual festival) and, during the reenactment, they will stage a “performative intervention,” which they will videotape to submit as their final project for class: "Three of them would dress as slaves, one wearing a harness under his clothes. One would act as the master, cracking a whip and issuing random, absurd order. [. . .] Then the slave wearing the hidden harness would get uppity, maybe make some untoward comment about the lady of the plantation or try to run off or just complaint that there wasn’t enough salt in the food. Then the party would get started. That slave would be hoisted from a low limb as if lynched."

Seems like a great idea, right? So, as planned, the 4 Little Indians travel to Braggsville for spring break, where they are welcomed with open arms by D’aron’s family (who have tactfully hidden their black lawn jockeys in the garage). They visit the Waffle House and Lou Davis’s Cash-n-Carry Bait Shop and Copy Center and other charming Southern spots, which they absorb with shock and awe. Their visit is certainly education. Unfortunately, however, their planned “performative intervention” does not go off without a hitch. In fact, things go downhill very, very quickly.

I read the first 200 pages in one sitting. And I LOVED it. The writing was arresting; the story was fabulous. Here are some of the things I thought when I started reading the book (up until about page 200):

-- Oh, my gosh. This is going to be a 4.5, for sure! This is the best start to a book I’ve read in ages. (The first chapter introduces you to protagonist D’aron by giving a run-down of the various nicknames by which he has been known over the years with their often unfortunate origins.).
-- I love this guy’s voice. It’s unique, it’s distinct, it’s fun. I like that the writing is peppered with slang (although the glossary at the end of the book is kind of lame) and references to current events. This T. Geronimo Johnson kind of reminds me of Junot Díaz.
-- Yes! This book smartly pokes fun at extreme liberalism/political correctness, the ridiculous culture of academia, and the deep-fried South. There are some great lines and paragraphs. Johnson does not shy away from making jokes about “sensitive” topics, which leads to many laugh-out-loud funny moments.
-- Oh, wait. I thought this T. Geronimo Johnson guy was from the South. His Waffle House lingo is flawed! Hashbrowns with jalapenos aren’t “spiced.” They’re “peppered.” He needed a Southern editor.

But then it all went to poop. The rest of the book took me about a week to finish. I was so disappointed! How can a book that starts out so well end so badly?! Here are some of the things I thought as I was finishing reading the book (after about page 200):

-- This book is trying too damn hard. An example: If you’re going to skip Chapter 13 and have it show up randomly between Chapters 21 and 22, then you should have a good reason to do so. Otherwise, stop trying to be cute.
-- This climaxed WAY too early . . . and had absolutely nowhere to go (at least nowhere good). So, basically, it just flounders and rambles and wanders for 150 pages.
-- Can we please send a memo to authors letting them know that standard punctuation should not be optional? Ugh.
-- The end of this book is a 2, at best.

It seems like Johnson started with a great, fully fleshed-out idea for the book’s beginning . . . and then just started writing before he had figured the whole thing out. It’s unfortunate, really. I really loved the first half of this book, and I kind of hated the second half. So, I averaged out the halves and gave the book as a whole a 3. And there you have it.

An Ambitious Attempt at Satire and Social Commentary
By Ethan
Every once in a while, an author attempts to make big statements about big ideas. To portray social subjects (racism, class, history, tradition, culture, etc.) in the confines of written words is no easy task. Often, any commentary becomes burdened by the mechanics of language. In his new novel, Welcome to Braggsville, author T. Geronimo Johnson attempts to tackle some of these topics.

As he begins his freshman year at UC Berkley, D'aron Davenport is clearly a fish out of water. Thousands of miles away from his hometown in Georgia, D'aron struggles to find his way in this new place. He has never had to put much effort into his school work, and quickly ascended to the top of his small high school class with minimal effort. But the rigors of collegiate academics have taken their toll on D'aron. After the first semester, he finds himself with unsatisfactory grades and the threat of academic probation. A meeting with his advisor reveals deeper internal issues. D'aron's advisor, who also made the move from small conservative town to large liberal city, diagnosis the young man's social conundrum. She tells him that his difficulty in reconciling his upbringing with the culture of his new setting is normal, but he must come to terms with these issues to achieve success in his studies.

It is not until an awkward turn at a party that things for D'aron begin to change. A misunderstanding finds D'aron, his roommate Louis Chang, Candice (from Iowa) and black prep school student Charlie being accused of being racially insensitive. From there, the group, 4 Little Indians as they call themselves, become close friends, and it seems that D'aron has overcome his social insecurity. It is an American History class on alternative perspectives that inspires the friends to create a performance piece that makes a political statement. D'aron's hometown, Braggsville, the kind of conservative place where "gay" is used as an insult or joke, holds an annual Civil War re-enactment. The group decides to make their statement at this event. When things don't proceed as expected, the foursome and the entire town of Braggsville are forced to face racial, social, and cultural issues that none of them could have anticipated.

Johnson tackles tough issues and interesting characters to middling results. The central plot and characters are very well conceived and offer natural ways to explore complex social issues. Unfortunately, Johnson's unique authorial voice takes a bit of time to get used to, sometimes making reading this novel a chore. As is so often the case with this subject matter, the mechanics of written language fail to portray the lofty ideas that are discussed. That being said, there is no denying Johnson's craft. Even when the plot becomes muddied by excess points and overtly obvious observations, Johnson manages to steer the story back to a central focus that is both timely and engaging. In the end, Welcome to Braggsville is not a book that everyone will enjoy, but definitely offers the kind of sharp satire and commentary that is difficult to achieve.

Miramont's Ghost, by Elizabeth Hall

Miramont Castle, built in 1897 and mysteriously abandoned three years later, is home to many secrets. Only one person knows the truth: Adrienne Beauvier, granddaughter of the Comte de Challembelles and cousin to the man who built the castle.

Clairvoyant from the time she could talk, Adrienne's visions show her the secrets of those around her. When her visions begin to reveal dark mysteries of her own aristocratic French family, Adrienne is confronted by her formidable Aunt Marie, who is determined to keep the young woman silent at any cost. Marie wrenches Adrienne from her home in France and takes her to America, to Miramont Castle, where she keeps the girl isolated and imprisoned. Surrounded by eerie premonitions, Adrienne is locked in a life-or-death struggle to learn the truth and escape her torment.

Reminiscent of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, this hauntingly atmospheric tale is inspired by historical research into the real-life Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Brilliantly rendered and chillingly dark. Evokes great emotion about the characters.
By Rob Slaven Photography
I chose those book as my Kindle First selection for the month of January. As I'm reading I'll jot down my thoughts so that you'll hopefully have better information as you make your selection.

After 89 pages, I'm keenly intrigued. The book begins in France in the year 1884 when our heroine is a small girl. The book is lush with description without being overly ponderous and the characters are richly and fully depicted. I feel a deep visceral dislike for several of them and a real kinship with others. If you like to be pulled in and have strong feelings about characters in a novel, this is a book for you. The story has a definite arc and I'm intrigued by what's going to happen next. So far then, I love it.

At page 109, we jump forward to our heroine at the age of 16 and things have started to turn rather dark and ominous. The people that I disliked fervently a few pages ago have now turned rather threatening and the dislike is has turned to positive annoyance. No spoilers though, just giving you a sense of the arc here.

Page 178... this is the point at which the reader so thoroughly loathes several characters and so sincerely fears for others that it's almost unbearable. The resemblance to a tangled romance novel continues but with deep undertones of a suspenseful murder mystery. Agh!

Page 210 to page 265... the novel has gone into emotional free-fall and becomes progressively darker. I won't leave any further updates because it would be too hard to not "spoiler" something but suffice to say that even the most evil previous inklings of what is to come next fall short of reality.

In summary, this is a wonderfully rendered bit of historical fiction that really whips up some emotional frenzy in the reader. I sincerely loathe and adore certain characters in this book. They run from downright evil to self-destructively passive and represent an thoroughly reprehensible cross-section of humanity at large. Also, the historical tidbits, while few, are apt and well-researched. This is one of those books that will haunt my memories for months to come. Well done if you like them EXTREMELY dark and gasp-worthy, depicting murder, rape and child molestation in pretty graphic detail. Just do note that this is not a "Ghost" story in the traditional sense of the word.

PS: I hope my review is helpful as you go to choose your own book this month. If not, please let me know what you would like to know and also any feedback on this review format. Thanks!

Never again
By J. Wilbur
I rarely actively dislike a book so severely I wonder why I am still reading it. Part of the fault here is mine, as I was expecting some form of ghost story or haunted house novel. This is no such thing, unless you grant a few tacked on pages at the end with being the main narrative drive of the story. Instead, this is a long, rambling history of a highly dysfunctional family. The writer shows sufficient mastery of language to draw me along for some time, but the abyssmal sense of plot and pace are dreadful. A couple of times during the book, I actually thought "I guess she felt she'd taken that as far as it will go, so this is going to be a different story now..." There is no payoff lurking at the end, no redemptive twist or upshot for having made it through. There is no clever tying up of the visions...no, all you get is a few things introduced after they've taken place - not mentioned when they happened, only mentioned later when needed to explain some plot point or other. This is one of those narratives about a life so bad that death is a release. It doesn't get better. Thankfully, it does eventually run out of pages.

Miramont's Ghost (Kindle Edition)
By Michael
I will preface my review with the fact that I am a fan of historically derived plots, action, thrillers, history, scenery, mystery, and suspense. I needed a book and the title and the description seemed to offer an intriguing story and checked most, though not all, of these boxes. I stopped reading after about 10 chapters or so. I almost never put a book down, and I would not be surprised to find myself chewing on this piece if gristle again. I found this book, to borrow a phrase from Simon Cowell, "simply ghastly". I knew I needed to just put it aside much earlier than I did. At first I thought that it would develop a likeable plot eventually. I found the protagonist very well portrayed, her innocence and curiosity as a child I found very believable. Since I could not bring myself to finish, I did not really see her portrayal as an adult. Everyone else was shallow or unlikeable or downright evil and getting more so with every page. So for me, the promise of mystery and ghosts and castles and counts and countesses was rapidly devolving into a cesspool of dark and evil. This book took effort to like, and I despise books that I have to work at. Overall the writing seemed decent, but the storyline was rapidly devolving from mysterious and compelling to dark and disgusting. This book was not adding value to my life experience. One star was as low as they would let me go. Life is too short to read books that disturb me at a visceral level.

Reflexology for Back Pain, by Ann Gillanders

Back pain afflicts most men and women at some point in their lives, and serious back problems result in lost work days, as well as hospital treatments that might have been avoided if early precautions had been taken. An increasingly popular therapy for avoiding back pain--and for alleviating back pain when it strikes--is reflexology. A therapy first used in ancient Egypt, reflexology focuses on reflexes in the feet as they relate to every other part of the body. Stimulating the correct point on the foot can alleviate back pain, relax the entire body, and improve nerve and blood supply. Ann Gillanders describes separate reflexology therapy methods for treating pain in the neck, the upper back, the shoulders, the lower back, and the knees. She also recommends exercise techniques for relieving pain caused by a slipped disk. A concluding chapter discusses treatments for osteoporosis and chronic back conditions. The book is filled with enlightening, full-color photos and diagrams.

A compact little number, awesome for quick artistic inspiration
By Brian T
The Little Book of Vintage Sci-Fi is a collection 1940's and 1950's comic book covers, panels and ads assembled mostly in random fashion (with an eye toward the more amusingly salacious illustrations and dialogue) and reproduced on a miniature scale, mere inches in both width and height. If you've set foot in a bookstore, like, ever, you'll have surely spotted teensy-tiny books just like these, generally in the vicinity of the cash registers, as they are to bookstores what candy and gum are to grocery stores: cheaply-priced trifles designed to be purchased on impulse. And they're designed to fit perfectly in a typical shirt pocket.

Little if any of the material within these editions is presented in anything approaching its entirety or even in continuity (though some panels certainly are), nor is scholarly appreciation really the point beyond Tim Pilcher's brief introductions and backgrounders. The books in this series -- comprised of tiny tomes encompassing lurid, often hyperbolic material likewise culled from Horror, Sci-Fi, Combat, Romance and other comics of the golden age (much of it produced under the legendary aegis of EC Comics -- are best savored as entry-level novelty items, which is obviously the spirit in which they were produced. If you want to read complete stories, or learn the full-bodied history of this glorious period in American publishing, there are bountiful histories, biographies, trade paperback reprints, and coffee-table books that will introduce you to the form from almost every conceivable angle. These little amusements, on the other hand, are simply samplers of the era and its comic art, an era all too short-lived as the holier-than-thou Catholic Legion of Decency (sheeyeah, right!), the Comics Code Authority and their vile ilk largely succeeded in their mission to whitewash the fun out of America from the mid-1930's to the mid-1960's. Whenever someone who lived through this period laments how much "simpler" and "better" and more moral times were "back then" compared to today, you can rest assured they're remembering the rose-colored, corn-fed Andy Hardy version of America these organizations tried so desperately to make real in the face of all evidence of natural human behaviour to the contrary, and not the reality itself. Comic books like those feted in this collection were the sacrificial lambs on the altar of conservative delusion.

If you're an artist of designer of any kind (as I am), or in any way a fan of this pulpy greatness already in possession of the types of standard-size books mentioned above (as I am), then a set of these miniature quickies may still prove useful when you're looking for a quick shot of inspiration without fear of unintentionally devoting several hours to re-reading these lurid stories all over again simply because you cracked the cover of some hefty volume on your shelf and couldn't put it down.

For those interesting in building a complete set of nine, here's your links:
The Little Book of Vintage Sci-Fi
The Little Book of Vintage Romance
The Little Book of Vintage Combat
Little Book of Vintage Love
Little Book of Vintage Terror
The Little Book of Vintage Horror
The Little Book of Vintage Sauciness
The Little Book of Vintage Crime
Little Book of Vintage Space

And yes, you'll likely see this same review on many of those listings, but this little series deserves the attention.

A somewhat interesting little book on old science fiction images and a few stories.
By Joseph J. Truncale
I have been a long time fan of science fiction books, comics, toys and movies. This little book (Only 41/2 inches by 31/2 inches) has a collection of old time science fiction comic covers, stories and old toy advertisements that were popular back in the 1950s. This volume is organized into six areas. It includes the introduction, an explanation of falling frogs science fiction story, out of the unknown No. 1 creature from the crater story, Facts about that great heavenly body, The sun, Our atomic future and It's patented.

One of the things I found interesting in this little book were some of the advertisements. As a young boy I remember sending for some of these things. They include the following: Jet: Rocket Space Ship, Major Mar's Rocket Ring, The Buck Rogers Sonic Ray and The Cosmic Smoke Gun. It is too bad I did not keep those crazy things I sent for when I was a young boy. They are probably worth a fortune today.

In conclusion, if you are into old time science fiction material you may want to check this small volume out.

Rating: 3 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Martial Art Myths)
