This book demystifies what appears to be a difficult and therefore unapproachable art form. The surprising simplicity of the process becomes clear as Margit Malmstrom lives up to her promise of "taking the fear and mystery out of terracotta sculpture". She provides comprehensive instructions by way of photographs and narrative to enable the artist to construct, fire and finish a piece successfully. And while the problems associated with working with terracotta appear to be few she addresses each one carefully.
Seven pieces in terracotta completed by the internationally renowned sculptor Bruno Lucchesi, illustrated in clear, sequential photographs, and accompanied by Malmstroms' easily understood narrative, makes this book accessible and user friendly. It is a must for every sculptor at every level.

In typical Tozer fashion, he cuts to the heart of every issue with Spirit-guided precision! Tozer tells the truth boldly, plainly, and unerringly on target. This little book is a treasury of spiritual insights like:
"Faith never goes contrary to reason; faith simply ignores reason and rises above it."
or
"I have been memorizing the Scriptures ever since I was converted, but my faith does not rest on God's promises. My faith rests upon God's character."

or, talking about the importance of emptying oneself:
"The less there is in the kettle, the quicker it begins to boil."
I love Tozer's straight-forwardness and his plain talk about complex matters. He takes the abstract and makes it concrete.
Tozer writes, "It is not enough that I hold an inspired book in my hands. I must have an inspired heart."
Thanks, Lord, for sending Tozer to us and for giving him such an inspired heart.

Did you ever wonder?

Did you ever wonder why so many evangelicals laud A. W. Tozer but lambaste the Christian mystics he so highly regarded? Have you ever tried to practice what Mr. Tozer preached and found yourself at odds with fellow evangelicals? If so, this book is for you.

It is a collection of essays. In one, entitled "Revelation is Not Enough," Mr. Tozer describes a battle over truth between evangelical rationalists and evangelical mystics. The rationalists believe that divine truth is reducible to mere words and creeds. If you hold the right opinion on the stated propositions, then you have the truth. If you can recite the creed, you have the truth. The rationalists search the scriptures, thinking that in them they have eternal life, but they will not eat the flesh or drink the blood of Him whom the scriptures bear witness. Mr. Tozer likens them to the pharisees, and notes the pharisees were the Lord's worst enemies. Hard words, but there is much at stake. This rationalism will kill off the truth, Mr. Tozer says, as surely but more subtly as a liberalism that denies the divine source of scripture.

Who is on the other side of this battle? Who are the evangelical mystics? They are the ones who believe, as Mr. Tozer did, that saints of old, such as Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, can instruct today's evangelicals on how to worship God in spirit and in truth. Whose hearts resonate with the words of Bernard of Clairvaux:

"We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread
and long to feast upon Thee still
We drink of Thee the Fountain Head
and thirst our souls from Thee to fill"

Not just for the academic

I can't believe this book isn't recommended by more screenwriting classes or playwriting classes, though I'm sure the academic language would intimidate a lot of people from reading it and the subject matter seems like specialized information, I learned a lot about creating a good story on any level. As scary as the language might seem at first, if you read carefully it offers very precise information on how the human brain structures plot, and how the Greek dramatists utilized these methods. This isn't just for people studying about the Orestia or Oedipus. In the first part of the book the author uses examples of "western" plotmaking from Monty Python to Casablanca. He delves into different theories of looking at how people interpret narrative and settles on a viewpoint that really clarifies how plot works in the human mind.

In the second part the author takes all this information to the examination of ancient narratives as an example of how the elements of plot structure we take for granted originated with Greek plays and stories. It's not an exciting read, per se, but coming from an aspiring writer's perspective I really felt like the author dissected storytelling to a microscopic level, and that was exciting for me.

About the Author

Phyllis J. Day, MSW, MA, PhD, has taught at Western Michigan University, Purdue University, Boise State University, Temple University and, most recently, at St. Ambrose University.  She received her MSW and PhD from the University of Michigan.  She has practiced social work at Crittenton Services and the United Way.  In addition to numerous papers and presentations, she is the author of A New History of Social Welfare.

 

Jerome H. Schiele, DSW, is a professor and associate dean in the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia.  He is a native of Hampton, Virginia and received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Hampton University in 1983.  He attained both his master's and doctoral degrees in social work from Howard University. Before arriving at the University of Georgia, he was professor and director of the PhD programs in social work at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland and Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Before that, he was an associate professor of social work at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, and he also directed its PhD program in social work for four years.  His first teaching position was as an assistant professor of social welfare at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he directed the MSW program for two years.  Dr. Schiele’s scholarly work focuses on social work practice theory, social welfare policy analysis, and diversity and oppression studies.  He has published numerous scholarly articles, essays, and book chapters, many of which appear in major academic periodicals and publications.  Dr. Schiele also is author of the book, Human Services and the Afrocentric Paradigm (Routledge, 2000), and he is the editor of the book, Social Welfare Policy: Regulation and Resistance among People of Color(Sage Publications, 2011).  Dr. Schiele’s primary teaching areas are social welfare history, social work practice theory, and social welfare policy analysis, and he is a member of several professional organizations.

"Not compatible with this device"

I've only read 2 chapters so far, but this seems like a great text! Just make sure you read the fine print and that it is compatible with the device you want to read it on! It doesn't work with older (non-tablet) Kindles or your iPhone! For nearly $100 for an electronic version, it should work for everything!

This book is in excellent condition and arrived faster than I expected.

I gave the rating I did because the book I ordered was used so I was thinking that it would be trashed. This book came fast and is in excellent condition. This book is required reading for one of my courses. It is a good read and very informative. The only problem I have is that I am unable to get into My Search Lab because I do not have the codes that came with the book. If somehow in the future with other text books you could make this possible it would be very helpful.

Taurin it seems is showing a new side to himself

Taurin it seems is showing a new side to himself. He was pegged as the bad guy in Wicked Nights but now. He gets his turn to show what he is truly made of. Now if he can just keep away from Kristin he will have nothing to worry about. Kristin is a force to be reckoned with and I think she has met her match with Taurin.

Save your money, the story line for this entire series is boring and awful. I wish I went with my gut and stopped after the first book, but I was really hoping it would get better - NOT !!!!!. The books are now at the used book store and I hope they just sit there and collect dust.

Tim Newburn is Professor of Criminology and Social Policy and Head of the Social Policy Department, London School of Economics. He is the author or editor of over 35 books, including: Permission and Regulation: Law and Morals in Post-war Britain (Routledge, 1991); The Future of Policing (with Rod Morgan, 1997); Private Security and Public Policing (with Trevor Jones, 1998); Policy Transfer and Criminal Justice (with Trevor Jones, 2007); Handbook of Policing (2008); and Key Readings in Criminology (2009). Tim Newburn is currently writing 'An Official History of Criminal Justice' (with David Downes and Paul Rock) and leads the LSE’s involvement in their joint project with the Guardian newspaper, Reading the Riots.

This book is thorough and can be used as a text book in several classes. It does an excellent job of putting the theories in historical context. However, there are critical criminology beliefs sprinkled throughout the book in the guise of objectivity.

Good book, bad delivery.

I tend to do 3 Stars for a great product and 2 more for great service and delivery. This book is great (I assume since our teacher loves it), but I was more than disappointed with my delivery.
I placed this order (I believe) on the 4th, and put one day shipping that I paid an absurd amount extra for, so I could get this book for my upcoming test on the 10th. More than enough time.
Not really.
Sure, it did get here in one day after it shipped, but the problem is I ordered it on the 4th and it didn't ship until the 10th. So I didn't get to even look at the book before my test.
I still got an 85, but blah. Now I have to do extra credit.
But really, good book. Just order it plenty before you need it.
