I didn't enjoy it

I bought this book for two reasons. First, it had positive reviews:) But also because the table of contents showed a wider number of subjects than the rest of books (e.g. classic control theory but also digital control, Lyapunov stability, optimal control, and some bits of fuzzy, neural, and adaptive control).

The problem is that the book is boring. Nise's Control System Engineering is much more readable.

Regarding the introduction of non-linear, optimal, robust, and adaptive control I think that the best is too go to the specialised sources.

this book is well written and it covers many aspects of control theory. the detail given is more than sufficient for an undergrad student. especially when it comes to doing the problems by hand, this book gives very good detailed worked examples.
books like norman nise give more matlab examples but students are required to do problems by hand in exams and homeworks. this book helps by giving more worked examples where matlab is not used.

This book provides a nice overview of neonatal physiology and pharmacology. Unfortunately a lot of the information is outdated, ie use of thiopental and uncuffed endotracheal tubes. I had hoped it would provide suggestions for the most up to date evidence-based practice, however that was an unrealistic expectation as studies simply have not been conducted in neonates. FYI some of the figure descriptions do not match up with the actual figures. Overall I'd rate this as "okay." I did learn a few tips that I will attempt in my own practice, such as using sufentanil for intraoperative analgesia and using pressure support ventilation during inhaled induction. Not a bad way to use my academic book fund...

Good, but many minor errors.

There are numerous, small errors throughout this book. If you're using this as a review for calculus (I'm studying for the GRE Math subject exam), and you come up against a problem that takes you more than 5~10 minutes to solve, the probability is high that the problem is a misprint. By checking the back of the book, you'll find what the problem should have been. In many of the cases I've come across, the mistake is simply a wrong "+" or "-" somewhere and occasionally you'll find misprinted coefficients or exponents.

While this is slightly annoying, the book does offer good practice to brush the rust off.

Perfect for a wall chart

Saliba describes each of his fundamental spread concepts and strategies in plain simple english, yet so concise, almost skeletal with such verve that I decided to construct a wall chart reflecting its contents.

The wall chart now sits proudly on my wall ( in the presence of 3 other wall charts ) and shows the 7 categories of option strategies - Synthetics, Insurance, Directional/Neutral, Directional, Either Direction, Non Directional and Volatility and their sub categories etc.

For this reason I think that Salibas book is perfect for the beginner.

I am new to trading commodity options. Although the book primarily talks about stock options, the rules and strategies are the same for all options, stock or commodity. The examples and tests with answers are easy to follow. This is an excellent book for learning strategies in options trading.

The return of the real Ed Brubaker to Marvel!

When Ed Brubaker took the chance on "resurrecting" Bucky Barnes with his initial CAPTAIN AMERICA arc, "The Winter Soldier", he upset quite a few people on bringing back a character whose death was considered to be inviolate (Bucky and Uncle Ben Parker were the two Comic Book deaths on Marvel's end that could never be undone), but doing it in such a clever "Bucky was never really dead" way and with the terrific art of Steve Epting backing him up, he elevated the resurrection of Bucky as a Cold War-era Soviet assassin to that of a master class of storytelling. He continued to develop the newly-minted Bucky (who got his memory back thanks to the greatest of the Marvel deus ex machinas, The Cosmic Cube) as a repentant and reluctant hero who would eventually be led on the path to redemption after the "death" of Steve Rogers allowed Bucky to "wield The Shield" and become the new Captain America. But during the events of the "event" comic FEAR ITSELF, it appeared that Bucky was killed by The Red Skull's daughter.

A TOTALLY NON-SPOILER SPOILER is coming up.

In the first issue of this trade, FEAR ITSELF 7.1, we find that Bucky in fact survived the assault, but the only people who will know this are Cap, Sharon Carter, Black Widow and Nick Fury. Bucky's (and Natasha's) new mission is to stay off the grid and out of the spotlight and find other "sleeper agents" like Bucky was and remove them from the Spy Game's playing field. They've taken the big action and heavy espionage of how CAPTAIN AMERICA used to be (before it split into two titles due to the 2011 feature film), and you shook in the darker edge of characters of Bucky and Natasha Romanoff leading the way, and you get WINTER SOLDIER.

The issues in this trade deal with the methods that Bucky (now really recalling his skill-set as The Winter Soldier) and Natasha's own initial training as they go across the country to find the other operatives that were actually trained by Bucky himself (as the Soviet assassin Winter Soldier). To make a long story short, they're not where they're supposed to be and this gives way to villains such as the old Soviet scientist Ivan Kragoff aka The Red Ghost, and former Latverian Prime Minister and SECRET WAR starter Lucia Von Bardas. This leads to some action-packed and honestly absurd situations that, in a lesser hand than Brubaker, wouldn't have worked. But Brubaker and his artist Jackson "Butch" Guice (whose artistic talent seems to have grown in leaps and bounds since he first teamed with Brubaker on CAPTAIN AMERICA) make this stuff work and work so well that it hearkens back to when Brubaker was doing his initial run on CAP as well as his work on DAREDEVIL, because while it's pretty action-heavy, it's very solid on its character work as well. The romance between Natasha and Bucky is totally believable, and the chemistry they have together shows very clearly on the page.

WINTER SOLDIER is a real return to form for Brubaker at Marvel, considering his less-than-stellar work on the current CAPTAIN AMERICA title and his co-plotting duties on the recently redone CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BUCKY series.

Bucky's back in this first TPB in his own series! Covering issues #1-5 of Winter Soldier plus starting out with Fear Itself #7.1: Captain America, Bucky is back from the dead as he takes on his Winter Soldier persona once more to fight in the shadows as a dead man. However, his first daunting task is to find the very sleeper agents he personally trained and stop them before they, controlled by Lucia Von Baron, dismantle the United States piece by piece.

Bucky and the Black Widow are in a new series up against machine-gun-wielding monkeys, Dr. Doom, Von Baron, the Red Ghost, and lots of soldiers in this action-packed book. Bucky's return is explained (in a rather boring way) in the Fear Itself issue to give you some information regarding his return and his series kicks right off. Some of the dialogue and scenes are awkward or poorly done like Bucky getting away with telling Dr. Doom to shut up on a few occasions without a peep from Doom or Fury's line "Buddy, if we didn't need you right now, you'd be in the deepest hole I could find...and I'd throw away the key." Because we all have to lock up our holes nowadays. Aside from that, we have some nice art by Butch Guice and this action story by Brubaker. It's a fun read but don't look for a classic, timeless story or something to really mentally sink into.

Spy Games

For a long time, Bucky Barnes was the deadest superhero in the world. Though other heroes died and came back, making the ultimate sacrifice just to sell more issues of their comics, Bucky remained blown to pieces somewhere deep in the ocean. That Captain America survived was just impossible to believe, though his return heralded a new era in comicdom and still maintains an international level of attention.

As it turns out, James Buchanan Barnes didn’t die after all. Ed Brubaker breathed new life into the character, bringing him back in a horrific manner and even equipping Bucky with a more adult origin than he’d ever had at any time before. Dick Grayson was wimp by comparison. Dick, who remains one of my favorite heroes, got trained to be a superhero sidekick and gradually stepped into his own.

Bucky was trained to be a commando, a boy who could slip in behind enemy lines and wreak havoc with German troops. A kid who laid down his life not only with Captain America, but also on his own during missions even Cap didn’t know about.

That was just the retcon. Brubaker pulled out all the stops when he turned Bucky into the Winter Soldier, one of the most feared killing machines of the Cold War. There’s a lot of history between then and now, and you can find it in the pages of Captain America’s own graphic novels.

Everyone (mostly) believed that Brubaker had again killed Bucky after his sojourn as the new Captain America, but that was a fabrication created by Bucky and Nick Fury. Bucky was trained to operate in the shadows, and after his near-miss with death, he wanted to return to those dark places and fight the fight he knew how to pursue.

In the opening five-issue arc (with an issue of Captain America thrown in to explain how Bucky is still alive), the Winter Soldier has returned and he’s paired with his lover, the Black Widow, to hunt down three Cold War sleeper agents who have a world threatening secret.

Brubaker is a master at retconning characters, and he does it again with the Red Ghost. Initially, the Ghost was Ivan Kragoff, a supervillain who subjected himself and three trained apes to the same cosmic radiation that gave the Fantastic Four their powers. In the pages of The Longest Winter, Kragoff shifts from what in the past has kind of been a laughable character to a formidable one.

The Winter Soldier and Black Widow continue the chase through the back doors of spydom, a place Brubaker is totally confident and at home in. The story quickly switches from feeling like a superhero strip to a spy story. The plans, the moves, the setbacks, all play out like a Mission: Impossible assignment.

When the story eventually reveals the true threat to the world, and it involves Doombots created by Doctor Doom, the stakes are raised as high as they can be. The Winter Soldier and the Black Widow have no choice but to attempt to bring Doctor Doom into the fold to help bring the threat to a close.

The world is still standing, so we know how that turned out, but the adventure is getting there. Brubaker is a master of pacing and character, and all the pieces of his layered plot fit well together.

Butch Guice’s artwork looks like captured celluloid. The action, the shadows, the cities, and the dark rooms all come to vibrant life. The inking is heavier than I generally like in a comic, but in this strip it’s the backbone of the mood and the threat.

Pick this one up, but don’t expect a quick, breezy read. The story and characters draw you in, and the artwork will guarantee you’ll flip back through it just to see Guice laying out some of the best panel work he’s ever done.

Loki Renard writes a very particular kind of fiction. If the word 'spanking' doesn't send a shiver down your spine and start you squirming where you sit, these books may seem strange and incomprehensible to you. If, on the other hand, the image of a sorry miscreant being put over a lover's lap for a good sound spanking or perhaps a much needed attitude adjustment calls to you, then these are the books you've been waiting for.

You know you have read a good story when you turn the last page wanting more.

My title says it all, this book could have kept going and I would have been a very happy camper. I liked the different aspects of the main character - she had depth to her personality and was really interesting. The world would be a better place if we had more like her that is for sure. The only negative thing I can honestly say about this book is Jake was introduced and then disappeared, I would have liked to know what happened with her, she intrigued me.

Overall a very interesting read and I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I really love all of Loki's books, and I can say I have all the lesbian stories.
Little Miss and the Law, was an excellent read, when it was over it left,
me with the desire read more about the characters.
Loki is and awesome writer, and a very good story teller.

Great characters I want to read more about

As always, Loki Renard tells a captivating story with intriguing characters that leave you wanting the story to continue. The "Law" in this story is a lawyer from Australia named Mackenzie, whom 'little miss' Stephanie describes as "a lady knight in a dark suit with a wicked smile". Stephanie soon finds out Mackenzie is all that and then some! There are two more characters introduced into the story that almost demand a sequel to this book. There is the brash and impudent Jake, Mackenzie's niece from Australia, who makes a surprise visit outside her office with no place to stay but with Mackenzie, where she ends up more than a handful of trouble. Then there is Archer, the sleek, dark nefarious former client whose past relationship to Mackenzie left this reader wanting to know much more of the details of their past. I hope there is a sequel to this book in the future.

Interesting in the beginning but most of it contained unconvincing logic.

It was fairly good at the beginning but when the author didn't reveal anything I didn't already know or thought, I lost interest because his logic didn't convince me to change my views of simple questions of translation errors in the Bible.

He did, however, raise lots of previously considered thoughts into the front of my mind about how so many churches try to take control of a person's mind which, in my view means they have ulterior motives of either getting and holding power over the people to get money. I've visited a number of churches and I've never run across one that didn't very nearly coerce the people for money some with promises of "salvation," fellowship or promises of sin forgiveness. The more money the person gives, the greater the so called 'benefit.' One church I went to promised a better place in the hereafter for much larger sums of money. I call it religious blackmail, if you don't give money, you will suffer.

Fantastic Book

This is a fantastic book. The authors really prove their arguments with scripture, logic, and common sense. We have been programmed and coerced in our Churches and our government. It is time to take back what we have lost and reassert our own independence. I don't want to give away the ending(s), it is life-changing. This is a milestone book that will define how we look at the 2nd coming of christ (or the lack thereof). I would highly suggest this book to anyone who cares about their religious, financial and political freedom.

About the Author

A tireless author and educator, Mouloud Feraoun (1913-62) was assassinated by a French terrorist group only three days before the cease-fire that marked the beginning of Algerian independence. His Journal, 1955-1962: Reflections on the French-Algerian War was published posthumously to great acclaim. James D. Le Seur is Associate Professor of History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Lucy R. McNair is a translator living in New York City.

Possibly the best novel out of Algeria

I would give this book a 5 star rating if it weren't for the translation.

Translation usually do not give justice to the original book. It is simply impossible. I read the book in its published French version and I happen to be from the same area as Feraoun himslef, so I am very familiar with the things that Feraoun talks about. Feraoun is one of the best Algerian writers . In this book which is almost autobiographical Feraoun tells the story of a young boy struggling to finish his studies in colonized Algeria, where there was not much room for the "indigents" (the autochtonous people, ie, the natives). Feraoun is drawn by the French culture that he admires only to discover that France is a brutal nation that is killing his people. I thank the Mr Le Sueur for bringing us the full text (original), because the early publisher (Le Seuil, France) removed parts that dealt with the war between France and Algeria.

This "novel" should be read either as a memoir of Mouloud Feraoun or as an anthropological portrayal of the Berbers of Kabylie

Mouloud Feraoun (b. 1913, d. 1962) was a Berber, from Kabylie, in Algeria. He was a schoolteacher and also a writer. In the latter role, he was well respected and he achieved such fame that, shortly before the end of the Algerian War for Independence, he was assassinated by the fascist OAS (even though he was a pacifist with no association with the FLN). A journal that he maintained during the War for Independence was published posthumously as "Journal, 1955-1962: Reflections on the French-Algerian War". It "has become the single most important document from the Algerian war of liberation", to quote the Introduction to this volume.

THE POOR MAN'S SON is the first book of Feraoun's to have been published (originally, in 1950). It is classified as a novel, but in essence it is an autobiography of Mouloud Feraoun, with a few details changed, including the name of the protagonist (to Fouroulou Menrad). It is the story of a Berber boy raised in a village of 2,000 in the mountainous Kabylie amongst a clannish people who are subsistence farmers and shepherds with a literacy rate of about ten percent. Many adult males go off to France for a year or so (or for years, or forever) to work at menial and/or dangerous jobs and send money home so that their families might live with a veneer of material comfort (much like the situation with Latinos in the United States over the past several decades). Fortune smiles on Fouroulou Menrad: he is awarded a scholarship to a regional secondary school and then to college at the École Normale, after which he becomes a schoolteacher back in the Kabylie supporting an extended family of upwards to fifteen people.

As a novel, THE POOR MAN'S SON is something of a dud. It is short on plot, drama, and suspense. Instead, it should be read either as a memoir of Mouloud Feraoun or as an anthropological portrayal of the Kabyle people in the first half of the twentieth century. In those two guises it was for me worth the several hours required to read its 150 pages. Feraoun has an odd style and he periodically shifts back and forth between the third and the first persons, but I adjusted to the quirkiness of the writing relatively quickly and eventually found the overall self-deprecating tone to be rather endearing.

The book divides into two unequal parts -- the first and much longer covers from 1913 to the advent of World War Two, while the second contains a brief portrayal of the Kabyle during the World War and an Epilogue on the uncertain and unsettled status of things in Kabylie after the War, on the eve of the War for Independence. The second part of the book contains some rather biting criticism of the French, especially Vichy France. For example, by 1942 both starvation and disease (especially typhus) were rampant in Kabylie, and natives would do anything to complement their woefully inadequate and corruptly distributed official rations. Feraoun comments: "The newspapers from Vichy, which the Kabyles never read because they do not know how to read, say that the black market is immoral. What a cruel joke! People die of hunger in a country that owns the Mitidja [a fertile plain surrounding Algiers and a major source of food for France proper], and they are told they are committing a sin by not dying faster!" It was probably because of these pointed anti-France sentiments that when THE POOR MAN'S SON was published by a mainstream French publisher in 1954, the second part was omitted. This edition restores the excised material.

A great example of North African Literature

This is a great book that talks about the life of one boy who became a man. The setting is Algeria during the French occupation. It helps if you understood the background history. The introduction is of enormous help in putting the historical background in perspective.
