The body of Polynices, Antigone's brother, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, the new king of Thebes. Antigone's faithfulness to her dead brother and his proper burial, and her defiance of the dictator Creon, seals her fate. Originally produced in Paris during the Nazi occupation, Anouilh's Antigone was seen by the French as theatre of the resistance and by the Germans as an affirmation of authority.

Includes an interview with translator Christopher Nixon and director Brendon Fox.

Also includes an interview with Ned Chaillet, a playwright, radio producer and director for the BBC. Chaillet is the former Deputy Drama Critic for the Times of London and the London theatre critic for the Wall Street Journal-Europe. He spoke with us about Antigone in the context of World War Two, the differences bewtween the original myth of Sophocles and the Anouilh version, and Anouilh's influence on later playwrights.

About the Author

Jean Anouilh (1910-87) is one of France's best-known dramatists. His play, ANTIGONE, was published during the Nazi occcupation of France in 1944 and is his most famous work.

Antigone

Anoulih's version of Antigone was adapted for the time in which he lived. It contains hidden symbols to, at the time, both get the book past the censors and give the french audience moral and courage to stand up to the Nazi's and follow their beliefs. The characters are adapted slightly to fit his version, ie Tieresas is left out and a nurse is introduced. He also had to adapt the personalities of the characters, for instance Antigone develops a whiny habit, and Creon is seen as a "good guy". This was also done in order to get the play by the sensors. It is a well-written play with rounder characters than the original. This version would be better read after reading the original.

A Most Difficult Play to Act

This version of Antigone written under German occupation is most difficult to act. Creon may be played as a reasonable man who has power forced upon him. And Antigone could be played as dangerous fanatic who flouts law that is necessary to preserve order in society on the edge of chaos. It is a masterpiece of abiguity. In certain ways the playwright has been more subtle than Sophocles. The problem that bothers most people who read the play is that the context of Sophocles is not the context of Anouilh. A director who doesn't understand this will try vainly to make Antigone into a Resitance fighter and Creon a a demonic Nazi. Doesn't work that way. This is a must read along side Sophocles.

Tedious - but I guess memory leaks aren't supposed to be interesting

Tedious. That is the word I find best describe Valgrind 3.3. Either that, or I was unusually tired when I read this book. That said I haven't found any other book on the subject that gives you a good introduction to Valgrind. So by all means buy it. But I would also recommend you to buy "The Art of Debugging with gdb, ddd and eclipse" from No Starch Press.

The definitive guide to Valgrind

This book is a nice little reference to Valgrind. It covers pretty much the common stuff you'll use Valgrind for. It is the first book I've ever bought that is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. The book is also available online, but since it's a pretty inexpensive book, I like having a dead tree version. Plus, I'm sure my money is going to some good cause.

Valuable Resource for a Valuable Tool

Ordinarily I wince at the notion of a book dedicated to an open source tool. Usually online resources are abundant and a book only summarizes the information that is already freely available.

My thoughts are different for the Valgrind Develpment Team's manual for Valgrind 3.3. Admittedly, this is a very advanced tool for developers. Having used it myself I find the tool and the authors' in-depth explanation to the nuances and pitfalls of such advanced debugging invaluable.

The audience may be small for such a publication but if you do any development on Linux (and now Mac OS X and *BSD) then Valgrind should be part of your development and testing plan.

In this edition of Surveying, as in earlier editions, our aim has been to produce a text that gives an up-to-date and concise treatment of the subject. Developments in the 1980s of electronic instruments and computer processing of data caused us to make radical alterations to the format of the sixth edition of the book.

In this new edition the publisher has taken the opportunity of modernizing the page layout of the book, but we have endeavoured to retain the revised format of the contents, updating sections where new and innovative instruments and techniques have developed. One area of major change in the 1990s has been the introduction of satellite surveying, GPS and GLONASS, into the realms of everyday surveying. The importance of these techniques has encouraged us to introduce a new chapter dedicated to the methods and equipment of satellite surveying, and some traditional techniques, such as plane table surveying and subtense tacheometry, have been removed from the text.

The publishers contacted a number of lecturers in universities and colleges, at home and abroad, asking them to appraise our proposals for this edition, and we received much helpful advice. We have tried to blend this with our thoughts, and we hope that our goal has been effectively achieved in that the text satisfies the requirements not only of students and others engaged in the construction industry but also of those with an interest in this subject, such as mining engineers, geographers and archaeologists.

When preparing the manuscript we have been indebted to the advice of our academic colleagues mentioned in the Preface; unfortunately their names were not disclosed, and accordingly we trust, therefore, that they will accept our gratitude as a group. Excellent surveying text

This text is a continuation of the high quality of earlier editions. It covers modern methods, without completely removing some of the more useful older methods of work. It is delivered in a compact form, without any loss of depth. Also, it is at least $14 cheaper than any comparable US surveying text.
Well-tested methods are provided here, and the text is sufficiently comprehensive to cover several courses at a range of different levels. This would cover a great deal of what is needed for an associates degree program, and the foundation of a Bachelors program (1.5 years of the main program). This is far better than most books in this field, and it is a better book.
Being a British book, there are a few limitations for the US market. The book is metric, which will pain a few people in the US who can't handle this (but then why are they in the surveying game?). The terminology is British (e.g. 'staff' vs 'rod'), but this is a relatively minor concern, and will expose students to the idea that Surveying is a multi-national discipline, especially important with FIG being based in the US at the moment. There is no coverage of cadastral issues, including PLSS, but that can be obtained from other works, and doesn't apply to all parts of the US, as it happens.
Highly recommended. It is the OSU text for Surveying and Geomatics Engineering students.

Great supplement to an intro to modern physics class

I also had Dr. Harris as my professor for modern physics, and he is simply the greatest at explaining non-intuitive ideas when it comes to modern physics. Similarly, this textbook is straightforward and concise, making this an ideal supplement to the class. However, it might be hard to fully understand concepts if you're only relying on the book.

Clean, clear, concise

I have been studying from this book for the past few weeks. Dr. Harris presents the material in a clean and clear way that demonstrates all the nuances and subtleties of relativity and quantum mechanics. Not only that, but the material is concise. Mathematical details are thrown into the Appendices for those who are interested in the mathematics, but for everyone else, the main results and concepts are presented. The problems, as I have seen, are also reasonable in length and difficulty.

This book is definitely worth your time and effort if you truly wish to gain a strong introduction to relativity and quantum mechanics.

Good Book

I'm taking Quantum 2 this semester, and this is the second book we were required to buy. The first was Cohen-Tannoudji (sp) Quantum Mechanics Volume 2, which was terrible.

Then, for the second half of this course we got this book. I wish I had looked at this book while we were using the Cohen book, because it is just so much easier to digest. It actually explains things, and gives examples in the text. A solid modern physics textbook for sure.
