Joaquim is a freckled boy of 11 who is not content with being a normal child and, in the company of his best friend, Eduardo, gets to investigate strange, mysterious and dangerous events.

Joaquim is convinced that the Martians are preparing an invasion of Earth.

But do not think that will be easy. In search of evidence of alien presence on our planet, the boys will come across unscrupulous and treacherous enemies. Worst of all: sergeant Gomes, personified violence, the representative of the repression of the dictatorship years, willing to do anything to capture the two little heroes. 

Invaders from Mars brings back to young readers, the pleasure of investigation and deduction, with a plot that is set in a time when there were no cell phones, to think of personal computers was science fiction and, for fun, was enough to leave home to meet friends and play ball, ride bike or ...

Invaders from Mars: The Adventures of Joaquim and Eduardo by Michael Ruman is a children's adventure tale that follows the strange and mysterious life of 11-year-old Joaquim and his best friend Eduardo. The story begins in 1969 with Joaquim certain of an alien invasion of Earth. But Eduardo is less convinced of the Martians' plans, so the two boys begin an adventure to find clues of aliens on Earth. The boys unwittingly stumble upon a real invasion plan of Earth and it is up to them to stop Sergeant Gomes and the rest of Earth's enemies. Can the boys stop the Martian invasion? Or will the aliens prove too strong to let a complex invasion plan be foiled by two preteen boys?

One thing that readers will appreciate about this story is the simplistic nature of this book. Because the setting is 1969, readers are thrust into a world without cell phones or video games or iPods, or any other electronic device. This was a refreshing aspect of the story. The main characters must use deductive reasoning to discover the truth about the alien invasion and can't rely on the Internet to solve their problems for them. This is a fun, cute mystery, with a lot of interesting clues that kids will really appreciate and understand. Parents can also be happy with the message of this story and feel good that their children are reading a nice, clean story that is educational as well as entertaining.

About the Author

John Bart Wilburn enrolled at the University of New Mexico in 1959 only to have his education interrupted by military service. He served in the US Air Force from 1962 to 1966 and was decorated for service in Operation Power Pack.

After his military career, Wilburn returned to the University of New Mexico, earning a BS in physics and mathematics in 1969 and an MS in physics in 1970. He then received an MS in optical sciences from the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Sciences in 1983.

Recruited by the National Security Agency that same year, Wilburn served as a supervising cryptologic scientist, earning awards for achievements in developing optical collection systems and cryptologic literature writing.

Leaving the NSA in 1992, Wilburn returned to the University of Arizona in Tucson as the manager of research programs at the College of Optical Sciences. He retired in 1999.

What girl talks like this?

This was a very odd book. I have NEVER heard a girl speak as Maisie did in this book. She never became real to me, not as a young girl or the woman she became later on.

There was so much fore shadowing of Doc being the *villain* in more ways then one, that by the time I got to the payoff I was no longer interested. I put the book down 2 times when Maisie started explaining everything to Edward with the tom foolery-asides of smoking, cats, phone calls, and all that yanging and yinging of speech.

The ending... Doc paid for his crimes? Edward has found peace?

An Undervalued Novel - I found it excellent

This book touched me deeply and went not for the easy answers that I see presented in so much fiction that tries to capture the distinct relationships within a family and the community in which that family exists, but for a subtle exploration of the limits and the desires of the characters. The writing was both lyric and beautiful. I found Wolff's willingness to give grace and depth to a variety of perspectives here (there is no easy villian, no easy victim, NO SIMPLE ANSWERS) incredible. This is work to touch the soul but you have to let it. Wonderful work Mr. Wolff.

Excessive in all aspects

Perhaps the goal of this novel is too grandiose, and that is why Wolff fails so obviously. Wolff tries to present each unique reader with a character that they can relate to, and instead ends up with a gang of stereotypes. He tries to show a family grappling with its problems, but the situations are so ridiculous that the book becomes a soap-opera-like melodrama. To some extent, this novel seems to be a bildungsroman, chronicling the growth of a boy into manhood. However, the childhood protagonist is hardly reconcilable to the adult, and the reader has trouble sympathizing with either. To see a family in crisis dissected more accurately, see Judith Guest's ORDINARY PEOPLE.
