Since the 18th century and the birth of what is laughingly known as the Enlightenment, the Book of Daniel has been subjected to the fiercest criticism. It has gone on until today, when amongst modernist scholars and the self-styled ‘higher critics’, nothing is too disparaging to say about it. In short, the Book of Daniel stands today in such a bloodied, bruised and battered condition, that few would risk their academic careers and reputations by defending even the smallest part of it. Now why should this be? Is it because the archaeological record is set against any notion of authenticity for Daniel? Surely, the answer is no. We shall see that there is a great wealth of fine archaeological and documentary detail which positively shouts the authenticity of Daniel. Not that the public ever get to hear about it, of course. That would never do. But the critics and disparaging scholars know it’s there. It’s just that they tend to keep such information to themselves. The purpose of this present enquiry, therefore, is to bring such information and evidence out into the light of day. For example, the most laughed-at episode in the Book of Daniel is surely that ‘silly and utterly fictitious tale’ about Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. It is ridiculed at every level and on every side. What is kept from the public, though, is the fact that these individuals, far from being fictional, are actually named in the contemporary cuneiform sources, the records of that same Babylonian Empire into which they’d been exiled. Daniel himself appears twice in these records, and in all cases we are able to add considerably to our knowledge concerning their respective careers at Babylon. This authenticating evidence has been known and documented for a great many years now, yet barely a word of it has been allowed to reach the public. We shall, of course, be considering it here – openly!

The best breakthrough scholarship on DANIEL in decades!

Dr. Bill Cooper---illustrating what real historical scholarship looks like---has investigated, analyzed, and marshalled the hisorical/archaeological evidence that pertains to the authenticity of the book of DANIEL. And what a wealth of evidences that he has accumulated and analyzed, digesting the details that most of us will never have the time to sift through. Truth is stranger than fiction, ofttimes, and the book of DANIEL is a remarkable example of that: the historic Daniel, whom the Lord Jesus Christ called "Daniel the prophet" (see Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14), is shown--by Dr. Cooper's competent and insightful documentation, to be a political figure well-knon in ancient inscriptions of the Babylonian and Medo-Persian empires. Likewise, Dr. Cooper documents how the secular records of the ancients record the political activities of Daniel's 3 famous friends (best known to us as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego). Why hasn't this ancient history, which repreatedly corroborates even the smallest details of the Bible, been better publicized? Even the temporary madness of Babylon's king Nebuchadnezzar is corroborated by secular history records. Dr. Cooper verifies, in his detail-documented analyses, archaeological data that are rarely (if ever) publicized. For example, recall the idolatrous golden statue reported in Daniel chapter 3, the statue that Daniel's 3 friends refused to bow down to? Scripture records the location as "Dura" (see Daniel 3:1), and Dr. Cooper provides historical verification of that place-name (Dura) which is remembered to this day by virtue of "the Dura Canal--Nahr Doura .. known by that name today, though you'd never learn that from the critics". Many examples of secular records are documented (such as various government records that name Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and/or Abednego), supporting the Bible's historicity. In his epilogue Dr. Cooper reminds the reader of the important fact that the Lord Jesus Christ verified Daniel as the historic prophet whom the Bible shows him to be -- thus reminding the reader that a conscious choice must be made about the authenticity of DANIEL: one must either side with Christ Himself, or side with those profane skeptics who claim that the book of DANIEL was a Maccabean era forgery, but one cannot stand on both sides of that fence. It is obvious that Dr. Bill Cooper is, quite wisely, on the side of the Lord Jesus. Once again, Dr. Cooper has provided the scholarly community with a real treasure!

Splendid Scholarship

Dr. Cooper smashes the critics again with his well researched book on Daniel. This book addresses the dating of the book and reveals evidences of Daniel and his three friends in the cuneiform record. The author pulls from archaeology, ancient writings, critics writings, and from the Bible to guide the reader to the irresistible conclusion that Daniel not only existed, but he wrote down everything exactly as it occured (or is to occur). Some of the tidbits that Cooper shares with the reader include (in an easy to read style) are about such things as how many dead persons were recorded as having died at the lion's den (guess whose name wasn't recorded - Daniel). Also, Abednego apparently worked for Nebuchadnezzar's son as an official secretary of sorts. This in itself is perhaps good evidence for how he (Evil-Merodach) happened to be influenced to release Jehoiachin, king of Judah, from prison and to grant him a stipend. The author provides additional evidence to reasonably conclude that Nebuchadnezzar may very well have trusted in the Lord God in his later days. In the end, this book sheds much light in dark places that critics have tried to keep in the dark (some of them knowing full well what they are doing). I recommend this book to one and all, but especially to the Bible believing Christian.

A fascinating book that brings together lots of historical evidence - and is not too long!

Dr. Bill Cooper's book is fascinating and excellent in many respects. It is one of a growing series, which also covers the books of Genesis, Esther, Jonah and the Gospels (so far). He is clearly a first-rate investigative historian, with a wide knowledge of ancient manuscripts, and he shows convincingly that the Book of Daniel is "entirely authentic and faithful to the historical record". Daniel was a real figure of history, who lived in the 6th century BC in Babylon and was an eye-witness to remarkable events as he served several kings of Babylon and finally Persia. This is verified by ancient documents, both directly and indirectly - quite a few being in the British Museum in London.

The Book of Daniel was first attacked head-on by Porphyry (3rd century AD), but since ~1850 so-called "higher critics" of the Bible have ridiculed it, mainly because of its remarkable prophecies foretelling events in detail that took place centuries later. The critics' assumption is that Daniel's book must be a fraud; but Dr. Cooper shows powerfully that it is their prejudiced assumption that flies in the face of all the historical evidence.

Dr. Cooper addresses and answers the lame, and sometimes ridiculous/out-of-date arguments of critics, such as about the languages contained in Daniel - even Pythagoras disproves them! But he also provides the varied positive evidence that attests to Daniel and his Hebrew friends, and the events they became caught up in. He shows persuasively that there are many small details given that any author writing centuries later could not possibly have known.

There is fascinating discussion about King Nebuchadnezzar's period of madness, why Daniel was thrown to the lions, and why Daniel and his friends probably played a part in the release of King Jehoiachin from prison, etc. In some cases we cannot be absolutely sure, but Dr. Cooper argues carefully based on all the evidence so far available.

I had read several much longer books about Daniel in the past, but found Dr. Cooper's added many fresh insights; it brought together the historical evidence and arguments for the authenticity of Daniel in a logical, comprehensible way. The book is only about 80 pages, but packs a huge amount in and is relatively easy to read. It includes a useful Appendix listing the relevant cuneiform tablets and other inscriptions, and a helpful Bibliography.

By showing that there is no good reason to doubt the authenticity of the Book of Daniel, Dr. Cooper intends to reassure those who are confused or discouraged by ill-founded 'modernist' attacks on the Bible. He also surely provides a lot of evidence that will be a challenge to any sincere critic willing to investigate the matter further. He asks why Bible critics withold or fail to address such a large amount of compelling evidence that attests to the authenticity of Daniel!

I have read Dr. Cooper's similar books on the authenticity of Jonah and Esther, and plan to read his books on Genesis and the gospels soon! I read his book "After the Flood" many years ago after hearing him speak at a conference - where I found his approach to history and the Bible gripping and inspiring. I highly recommend all of Bill Cooper's books!

I have never been compelled to write a review before, but: this novel was such a gift, a treasure and an experience for me that I need to. For a few days, I had the pleasure of ingesting this novel, growing to know and care for its main character, Cameron, whose life and complexity captured my heart. After spending nearly 500 pages together, I think of Cameron as someone I know, who struggles through the challenges of growing up, coming out, and developing the values that will guide her through her own unique life journey. I love her: she's beautiful and authentic and has the power to make a difference in a young reader's life, while reminding us adult readers of just how complicated and challenging adolescence is. "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" is truly a work of literary art, and I hope there's more of Cameron's story to come.

A Gem of a Novel

** SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THIS BOOK**

Normally a book like this would not be something I would pick up. I get caught up in my own reading preferences: third-person narratives, no switching through different perspectives, and no frame devices, only a single solid story, evenly paced. Had I done my research beforehand, I may never have read this awesome book.

I think my favourite part of the book is the middle, when everything is both a revelation and hopeful. But for me, the last part was most important. I'm used to hating these counsellors who think they can change someone's sexuality or gender identity, and I think in the context of modern day counsellors, I still don't like them. They've had years to realize that what they're doing actually hurts people and they still persist in their "treatments."

But in the Miseducation of Cameron Post, I came to understand why someone like Rick might turn to God, might be willing to de-gay himself. With an aunt like Lydia, and probably more family and friends who believe the same, this book makes it clear how someone might internalize the belief that their sexuality makes them unlovable to God. There was a character, a boy at God's Promise whose name I have unfortunately forgotten (I just moved, and my book is still in a box), but he went through a similar situation. He believes that he won't be good enough for his father until he is "cured," until he reaches some masculine ideal that he and his father have both internalized as an ideal goal. Characters like these are not often portrayed, at least not that I've read. We are more used to the rebellions, like that of Cameron, Jane, and Adam. The reason why I've fixated on characters like Rick and the boy is because I think their stories should be told, too. Through these characters, I better understood the damage that the teachings at God's Promise were inflicting on these young people.

As much as I hate counsellors like Rick and Lydia in the present, I had more sympathy for them in this book. Well, not Lydia. And even the people in Cameron's hometown, like Aunt Ruth and Coley's parents, I had more sympathy for them than I expected to have. I've often found it difficult to feel anything but anger for people who are like this in real life, but their portrayal in this book showed that they truly believe they are in the right. And even if I do think they're misguided, this book has succeeded in humanizing them to the point where I cannot blindly spew anger in their direction

Good, but a little long

Cameron Post is a young girl who has basically the worst thing happen to her — her parents are killed in a car accident. Coincidentally, that same day is the first time she kisses a girl, and because children aren’t logical, she connects the two events in her mind, thus beginning several years of confusion and denial and secrecy.

In the mid-90s, rural Montana isn’t really a bastion of progressive or inclusive thought. Cameron had a difficult path to navigate as she tries to figure out who she is and who her real friends are. And when one of those friends betrays her, she has to start all over again in an even more difficult environment.

As an adult, I really related to the time period in the book. I would have been right around Cameron’s age, and the story made me think about what would have happened if there were a Cameron in my hometown, in my high school. Heck, there may have been a Cameron, and I just didn’t know it.

I do have a few minor criticisms. For one, I thought it was a little too long. And two, it ends *really* abruptly. I actually would forgo some of the earlier parts of the book in exchange for a little more followup. Though I guess it says good things about the story that I want to know what happens next!

King Jesus? Maybe. But Grave('s) Assumptions!

Entered upon this quest with an open mind and the enthusiasm of I, Claudius in the background. But I was somewhat disappointed. I had forgotten that as good as I, Claudius was, the original Suetonius from which it was taken was better. So Graves dragged in everything he could to the Jesus story, including a lot of Frazer's Golden Bough Myth of the King stuff. Then he (Graves)hammered his square pegs into the already-rounded holes of New Testament historic anthropology. Even the absurd notion of Jesus having his left leg ceremoniously disjointed so that he could be a lame king, according to the Greco-Dionysian formula. Sure, there was a lot to learn from Graves rendition, and I appreciated his rational explanations for the so-called miracles, but he stretched the story of the Life of Jesus to unbelievable limits and conjectures, and that's even AFTER accepting the remote possibility that the eldest of Herod the Great's kids, Herod Antipas, MAY have been the true father of Jesus. I'm sorry, I had high hopes for this, and I'm a big fan of Graves usually, but if there is a justification for this book, it's the fact that it's clearly described as a novel, and that's how it should be cataloged, as fiction. To get closer to the true and accurate historicity of the new Testament stories, I would heartily recommend Schonfield, even though he has his own detractors.

Very Interesting Story

This is my 2nd copy--I loaned my first to a friend who needed something to read on a long flight home to Guatemala. It's the kind of book, like Dorothy Dunnett's King Hereafter (about MacBeth), that deserves several reads for all the historical/cultural info.

Lawton R. Burns is the James Joo-Jin Kim Professor and professor of Health Care Systems and Management in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. How to Create Win-Win-Win Partnerships in Health Care

Burns and several of his Wharton School colleagues collaborated on this book as well as a subsequently published book, The Business of Healthcare Innovation, which I also highly recommend. In the later work's Introduction when explaining the value chain perspective, Burns observes that it "analyzes the entire sequence from raw materials (input) market to final customer (output) market. The sequence is labeled a `value chain' because each link in the chain adds value to its inputs. Each link seeks to maximize its contributions to the total product's value added, thereby capturing as much profit as it can. This may involve focusing on only those links which add the greatest value (and let other firms focus on links that add less value), or encompassing as many links as possible in order to maximize the total profit captured (and leave as little as possible for other firms to divide up)."

This is a key point because whatever decision is made, there can be -- and almost always are -- significant consequences insofar as gross volume, net income, and market share are concerned. In this earlier published volume, Burns and his Wharton School collaborators focus on a large segment of the health care industry which, until now, has not received the attention it deserves. They rigorously examine "the trading relationships between [and among] the producers (manufacturers) of health care products, the purchasers of these products (group purchasing organizations, wholesalers/distributors), and the health care providers (hospital customers) that are the end users of those products -- hence the title of this book."

This is by no means an "easy read" but, as does The Business of Healthcare Innovation, it generously rewards those who absorb and digest the material, then carefully consider appropriate ways by which to apply what they have learned. Obviously, the relevance of the material will ultimately be determined by its practical value to each reader but it may be helpful if I suggest some of the questions to which Burns and his Wharton School collaborators respond.

1. What does the health care value chain consist of and how does it work?

2. What are the major pathways and stumbling blocks to improved value chain operations?

3. Which are the most effective strategies used by manufacturers in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical-surgical product areas?

4. Which are the most effective strategies used by group purchasing organizations and wholesaler/distributors?

5. What do the health care value chain and the "extended enterprise" found in the auto industry share in common? So what?

It is important to keep in mind that this book was published in 2002. There have been several significant developments within the health care industry since then, several of which Burns and his Wharton School collaborators examine in The Business of Healthcare Innovation (published in August, 2005). I take this opportunity to recommend, also, Steven J. Spear's article, "Fixing Health Care from the Inside, Today" which appeared in the September 2005 issue of Harvard Business Review.

For whom will this book be most valuable? In my opinion, there are two separate groups. The first consists of teachers and students associated with undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs such as those offered by the Wharton Center for Health Management and Economics. The second group would include senior-level executives of organizations which are (a) producers of health care products, (b) purchasers of these products, or (c) health care providers that are the end users of these products. I presume to observe that decision-makers in any one of these three categories would be well-advised to understand its inter-relationships with the other two.

In the concluding chapter of this book, Burns and John R. Kimberly suggest that in order to avoid the failure of prior organizational innovation (e.g. integrated health care), "the revamped health care value chain must find parties willing to pay for it." Given the nature and extent of the investment required, it seems imperative that all of those involved share the costs as well as the benefits of organizational innovation. According to Burns and his Wharton associates, there is no acceptable alternative.

Excellent Industry Overview

For anyone working in the manufacturing or distribution industry within pharmaceutical, diagnostic or medical device companies, this book offers an excellent oversight. Its very helpful for anyone doing business analyst work in a technology department who is new to the industry, but wants to come up to speed rapidly. I recommend it for everyone in my department.

Its rare that a good overview of an industry value chain is available and so accessible to help someone understand how an industry operates.

Comprehensive Analysis

The author can be forgiven for writing a book that reads a little more like a formal academic paper, given his illustrious credentials. However, it is a surprisingly comfortable read given the complexity of the industry (if you could call it one industry) and the material covered. His analysis is as comprehensive as it is thought provoking. He does an excellent job of portraying the myriad of complex relationships between various evermore technologically sophisticated players within the health value chain. I would have preferred more coverage and discussion of specific company/organizational profiles. But, his artful and deft handling of the complex subject matter presented in a way that gives the reader many "aha" moments makes this book a must-read for anyone serious about the business of healthcare.
