Body Criticism: Imaging the Unseen in Enlightenment Art and Medicine, by Barbara Maria Stafford

In this erudite and profusely illustrated history of perception, Barbara Stafford explores a remarkable set of body metaphors deriving from both aesthetic and medical practices that were developed during the enlightenment for making visible the unseeable aspects of the world. While she focuses on these metaphors as a reflection of the changing attitudes toward the human body during the period of birth of the modern world, she also presents a strong argument for our need to recognize the occurrence of a profound revolution -- a radical shift from a textbased to a visually centered culture. Stafford agues, in fact, that modern societies need to develop innovative, nonlinguistic paradigms and to train a broad public in visual aptitude.Barbara Maria Stafford is Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago.

Stafford's book is... full of intriguing, even intoxicating, ideas. For anyone involved with images it opens unexplored avenues of thought, forcing one to question traditional assumptions about both images and text.

Excellent and original synthesis
By David Auerbach
Stafford's book is quite remarkable, far more challenging and original than most art criticism today. She has both the careful eye and historical rigor of Panofsky, but also a more challenging philosophical streak that owes something to Diderot and Peirce. Some of the material covered reminded me of Lorraine Daston and Marina Warner, but Stafford is deeper and more focused. Stafford covers a lot of ground, but she has a very specific goal in mind and does not wander anecdotally.

Her thesis is hard to summarize, but her main concern is how the visual arts and the experimental natural sciences, particularly in the French Enlightenment, opened up worlds that were closed down by the high Platonic rationalism of the Renaissance as well as the British Enlightenment. Going through a great deal of the material of the French philosophes (Diderot, D'Alembert, Buffon, and a host of lesser-known figures), she tries to evoke the elusive matter that defies easy conceptualization and mathematicization. The visual, for Stafford, is a way of seeing degrees of difference and similarity that don't "fit" with discrete conceptualizations of the world offered by Descartes, Bacon, and Newton. She makes this case quite well, avoiding so many of the cliched (and wrong) ideas about the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution that plague less rigorous books.

Ironically, while I agree with many of her findings and find many of her analyses illuminating, I disagree with one of her main points: that her subject is *necessarily* the domain of the visual. While she has used the visual to try to bring out aspects of metaphor and analogy that defy capture in rationalist systems, I don't see why those aspects need to be visual. They can be found in literature (particularly experimental fiction and poetry), music, and even certain forms of philosophy. And I'm not sure that the visual is even necessarily *better* at bringing out those metaphorical realms than non-visual forms of expression. But this doesn't harm the book, since she manages to elicit plenty from the visual.

Stafford throws a lot of diverse material at the reader--it's useful to have the internet handy to look up the background on less familiar things. A more general background on the French Enlightenment wouldn't hurt either. But for those willing to work a bit, this is a very rewarding and unusual book.
