This book takes you through a reality that is lived in lebanon. The characters have amazing personalities and the author winds all the stories together very well. I started reading it out if curiosity and i ended up finishing the book in a week, i read during every free moment i had.

This bible study was highly disappointing. My study group was often confused how the verses selected applied to the stated title. Lessons were composed primarily of observation questions and rare application questions. This means the book fails in helping the reader understand, apply, and appreciate the fruit of the spirit.

The study guide is also written with a definite gender bias against male readers. Several group members complained that it was a difficult study to do because of the mindlessness of the questions. To add injury to insult, the study shows signs of not having been properly proofread as incorrect homonyms show up in several of the lessons.

After reading the reviews for this study I reluctantly decided to use it for our ladies group. I introduced it as bible study "light". Although the Q&A is brief we have had some very in depth discussion on each topic. You can make it worth your while if you have a mind to.

Study of the Fruit

Not what I expected, for sure. Some of the introductions seem irrelevent. For instance: Chapter 2, Joy - "Roller coasters. Great sex. The birth of a baby. Surprise party. When we hear the word joy we are likely to connect it with special events." Really?! Great Sex!! It is either beyond joy or a surprise. I need to do more background study to lead our Bible study or we would be finished in 1/2 hour. Usually appreciate the Lifeguide studies. This one is a disappointment.

About the Author

Neil Gaiman is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels Neverwhere, Stardust, American Gods, Coraline, Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book, Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett), The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains; the Sandman series of graphic novels; and the story collections Smoke and Mirrors, Fragile Things, and Trigger Warning. He is the winner of numerous literary honors, including the Hugo, Bram Stoker, and World Fantasy awards, and the Newbery and Carnegie Medals. Originally from England, he now lives in the United States. He is Professor in the Arts at Bard College.

Cover artist Eddie Campbell created the Bacchus comic series and the semiautobiographical Alec graphic novels, and is the artist behind From Hell (created with Alan Moore). Bedtime story

Neil's wondrous work left me feeling like like a happy child again. At the end, I felt like pulling on his sleeve. "Read it again, please!" No problem. Neil's voice is available any time. What a gift! Knowing it would be there, I could get on with morning chores. Nobody does myth like Gaiman. There were some places that still need a good proofreader, though. I didn't mind places where the read text diverged from the print, which was explained in the postscript. That just felt more like Neil's right here reading to me. Careless copy editing, though, is inexcusable in a text this short. Not enough to drop a star...Gaiman's too good for that...but enough that I'd ask that a repaired copy replace those sent out in early sales. There aren't that many errors, so go fix the bloody thing!

A Skye folk tale, not for children

Neil Gaiman's new book, The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains, looks in layout and design like a children's book. But it is no more a tale for children than those the Grimms collected. It is in form a Skye folk tale, and like any such tale has echoes of the 45 and of the King over the water. It is as hard and sharp and precise of detail as a folk tale, and as dark and violent as well. I read it in less than an hour. I doubt I will forget it, and would not be surprised to dream of it.

So starts this dark tale of a journey, a quest into the Black Mountains to find a cave - to find the truth. Our narrator is a small man, a dwarf, but he's strong and he's driven; by what, we don't yet know but we feel a slow anger in him, an undiminished determination despite his ten year search for the object of his obsession. As we meet him, he is about to hire a guide, Calum MacInnes, to take him to a cave on the Misty Isle which is reputed to be filled with gold...

This book is nothing less than stunning. Gaiman's wonderfully dark story is equalled and enhanced by the amazingly atmospheric illustrations of Eddie Campbell. The two elements - words and pictures - are completely entwined. There's no feeling of the one being an addition to the other - each is essential and together they form something magical. The tale is by turns moving, mystical, dramatic, frightening; and the illustrations, many of them done in very dark colours, create a sense of mirky gloom and growing apprehension and, as the story darkens, some of the later pictures are truly macabre and unforgettable.

Gaiman was apparently inspired to write the story by his visits to the Isle of Skye and the legends of the Hebrides. While the pictures quite clearly place the story in the Highlands - the kilts, the purples and greens, the blackness of the mountains - Gaiman has very wisely steered clear of any attempt to 'do' dialect. The book is written in standard English, but with the lush layering of traditional legends and with a rhythm in the words that really calls for it to be read aloud. Perhaps this isn't surprising since the story was originally devised to be read by Gaiman himself at the Sydney Opera House with Campbell's illustrations projected as a backdrop. I was the lucky, lucky recipient of a hardback copy of the book, but apparently the Kindle Fire edition has audio and video links, though to what I don't know. However, the book is so beautiful that, devoted though I am to my Kindle, this is one where I would strongly recommend the paper version.

All the way through, the story is foreshadowing the eventual end as if to suggest that all things are fore-ordained. It's well worth reading the book twice in fact (it's only 73 pages) - the first reading has all the tension of not knowing how it ends, while the second reading allows the reader to see how carefully Gaiman fits everything together to create the folk-tale feeling of inevitability. And then read it again a third time, just because it's wonderful. I end where I began - stunning!

Well worth it

Really like the book, great explanations which are easy to understand. The only difficulty I have is that it is organized alphabetically by Japanese term. This makes it easy to find what some term means, but sometimes I spend considerable time leafing through to find all of the types of a particular thing. For his next book, I would like the same book in reverse. That is English terms with the corresponding Japanese term, so I can learn about engraving or some such. Anyway glad I bought it, I am just waiting for Volume II.

Clumsy narrative

Outstanding figures and very complete descriptions. However, as an English speaking engineer, I found many of the discussions rather clumsily written. I'm guessing that it was translated from the German by someone who doesn't thoroughly understand the subject matter.
