About the Author
Stephen Quinn is an associate professor of journalism in the Faculty of Arts at Deakin University in Australia. He previously served as an associate professor of journalism at Ball State University and as both the director of the Center for Media Training and Research and an associate professor of journalism at Zayed University in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He has also taught journalism in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Between 1975 and 1990, Quinn worked full time as a reporter, writer, editor and columnist in Australia, Thailand, the UK and New Zealand. He started with regional newspapers in Australia (the Newcastle Herald) and has worked -- in chronological order -- for the Bangkok Post, the Press Association in London, BBC-TV, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Television New Zealand, Independent Television News in London, and The Guardian in London. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Newcastle in Australia, his master's degree from The City University in London and his Ph.D. from the University of Wollongong in Australia. Quinn is the author of Convergent Journalism and Conversations on Convergence (both New York: Peter Lang 2005) Knowledge Management in the Digital Newsroom (Oxford: Focal Press 2002), Digital Sub-Editing and Design (Oxford: Focal Press 2001), Newsgathering on the Net second edition (Melbourne: Macmillan 2001) and The Art of Learning (Sydney: UNSW Press 1999).
Stephen Lamble PhD is Associate Professor of Journalism and Head of the School of Communication at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia. Dr Lamble founded, and leads, the university's innovative journalism program in which students become multiskilled and learn to work across all media. A former senior journalist with News Limited's The Sunday Mail newspaper in Queensland, he was one of the first Australian journalist to adopt computer-assisted reporting methods. A specialist investigative reporter, he has been recognised in Australia's most prestigious journalism awards, the Walkley Awards, as the most outstanding journalist in any media in Queensland. He has been a newspaper editor, copy editor, photo-journalist and consultant editor. His PhD focussed on computer-assisted reporting and freedom of information. He is co-author of The Daily Miracle: An Introduction to Journalism, third edition, (Oxford University Press: South Melbourne 2006).

A must Have

This edition by Plycon Press is the same as the Fairchild one, and A LOT more affordable. It was selling for $75 in excellent, I mean practically new condition, compared to the Fairchild that sells used in fair condition for $299. It is a great reference for basic pattern making and drafting.

Very good addition to your library

Good book on the subject, although I value his grading text even more. This book has some pages on things I've not found anywhere else, or at least not as well presented, such as a section on shirring guidelines. His couple of pages on button and buttonhole placement is also well done.

More "pulps"from the UK. The stories in all thes little paper bound books are culled from the pages of the COMMANDOS series of comic like books from the sixties and seventies. Amazon imports and offers these works at great value to the buyer. Service is quick and dependable. This series needs no rehashing on my part explaining them. See other reviews...you're interested or you wouldn't be reading my review!
True to its title, the three stories in this volume deal with fighting in the North African desert areas in WWII. SAS and LRDG stories...and a surprising one that puts British, Italian, and Germans together against a common and evil foe. With a twist or two of humerous dialog! Not bad...take a look for yourself...you probably won't be disappointed!

Opting out," "off-ramping" and "following the mommy track" are all popular terms to describe professional women who leave their jobs to be stay-at-home moms. But do they describe the truth of the matter? Stone, an associate professor of sociology at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, set out to answer this question after discovering that there was no research on the matter; perceptions of these women were shaped almost exclusively by the media. Stone conducted in-depth interviews with 54 women: white women who had been highly successful professionals and were married to men who could support them while they stayed at home—i.e., women who had a "choice." What Stone found was fascinating and surprising: women quit because of work, not family, and only as a last resort: "They have been unsuccessful in their efforts to find flexibility or... because they found themselves marginalized and stigmatized, negatively reinforced for trying to hold onto their careers after becoming mothers." These women were abandoning "all-or-nothing" workplaces where the demands were so unrelenting that, as one mutual fund trader put it, "there were days when I couldn't get up from my desk to go to the bathroom." A nicely balanced look at the pros and cons of opting out, with real examples

What I particularly liked about this book: Stone's interviews and discussions with actual women who decided to opt out of working (even though many of them could have made big bucks) as well as her solid research.

Readers should be aware that the author, by her own admission (p. 15 of the book), focused on white married women with children and that these women had previously worked as managers or professionals. If you don't fall into that group, this book may not appeal to you. These women, for the most part, also had husbands who could support their decision to stay home.In short, these women often had expensive college degrees and were high achievers.

Stone also points out that women who tend to "opt out" are the exception, not the rule, citing studies that indicate that 70 percent of the women who are married mothers of preschoolers still continue to work. Turn this figure around and the reality is that one out of every four women DOES decide to stay home. This book is an exploration of these particular women and it is written in what I found to be a very nonjudgmental and open style.

The author was also able to get some company heads to admit their mixed feelings about mothers in the workplace, their fears about them being less committed to their jobs or more likely to quit.

Other areas covered in this book include:

Each woman's story was unique, often complex and with many factors.

There was often ambivalence and a shifting of roles within the home

Their decision did NOT signal a return to traditionalism (p. 19).

Their former workplaces often made it difficult, if not impossible, for them to continue balancing family and work, rejecting their attempts to create innovations while maintaining productivity.

Good Read

This book was great. I would recommend this book to any women thinking about starting a family or anyone concerned with the shortage of women in corporate world. This book read almost like a novel since you follow the lives of several women. It is very enjoyable and dosen't preach about which choice is better for a women to make, working or staying at home. I really liked it and learned a lot. My one complaint is that women in this book are all super rich and had very powerful jobs. Perhaps the author should have looked at minority and middle class women as well.

Excellent Examination of the Complicated Decision to Stay Home

Pamela Stone's examination of the issues and complexities of making the decision to leave a career, or at least to take a multi year career break, is spot on. I was on maternity leave with my first child when my company collapsed, so I knew I wasn't returning to that job. But I did have to decide whether to start looking for another full time job. My husband and I weren't getting any younger and we wanted to have more kids so I ended up working in limited part time jobs for a few years and then took a complete career break when my fourth child was born. It was tough to watch my peers advance in their careers while mine was at a standstill. Ultimately I returned to work, first in a demanding full time job at an investment firm and then as the author of a book on career reentry and founder of a company focusing on career reentry programming. But it was a long journey and I could relate directly to experiences of the women profiled in Stone's book. Her voice is a critical one in the "opt out/opt in" discussion.

A Very Good Reason to Read It.

This author's style of writing gives the reader a feeling of intimacy with the characters, as if you are part of their circle of acquaintances. Frequently the door is opened to the seamier side of life and the reader is subjected to the perspectives of what a medical professional and police officer sometimes have to face. It isn't pretty. Although there is violence, those parts of the narration are presented with such care as if to protect the reader from the harsher realities of life. I must admit I appreciated that, since I have imagination enough without needing the added extra of minute detail to colour my dreams of gore. Even though the subject of this book is in not pleasant, I found it less full-on than the other books this author has written. I don't quite know how I feel about that. Probably relieved, but still... I can't quite say something was missing, because I don't think it was. Just that the book was more tame. Thinking about that, I think what it is is that the book was realistic, as in the situations, as they are written in this book, are much more likely to occur than the circumstances in the other books by this author. When you think of it like that, then chills run down your spine. This could happen to any one of us.

Another great mystery from Cari Hunter

I waited 2 days after I bought this book to start reading because I knew I would sit down and not stop until I had finished the entire thing. It was well worth the wait. Outstanding character development. I am so looking forward to seeing where these characters go in upcoming stories. Believable well paced mystery. This book is a keeper. Buy it. Read it. Count the days until next installment.

"Very good craft. Great story. I would like to have seen more kickass in the heroine. A little to indecisive for my taste. But a great story idea that really grabs you about midway through.
I’d like to have seen the heroine force the issue a little more. The plot components are all there and in order. But the heroine could have made that flow a little faster, a little more captivating by rebelling every once in a while.
Setting is Excellent.
The reveal was a little slow on a few issues and, I believe, incomplete on others. The heroines’ father. How that impacted her decision making could have been developed a little more. And there were two specific times I wanted to grab the H and yell at her. Go do this now. You not doing this particular thing is out of character for you. The most important of the two was when they finally linked one person to the killings (Farley I believe) and everyone else gave up on the second victim (Rachel). And our H went home wounded and tired, all teary eyed, but she had a hunch or maybe a hope. She shouldn’t have given up. She should of fought Meg to the point of anger and continued the search on her own. In the dark. In the rain. Through the pain. That’s what makes our heroes heroic.
Great stuff. Nice flow. Very clean. Well edited. Only mention here would be using a lot of brand names. Especially products that a reader outside the UK may never have heard of before.
Great one. I will be finding another title by this author for personal reading."

A fabulous mystery, well grounded in setting, creepy and steadily paced, reminiscent of the television show Broadchurch.

Brilliant. This started out looking like another trudge through a cliché formula, then suddenly spun out into a hair-raising hunt. I'd go on about how good it is but I don't want to give away any surprises. A real surprise.

An excellent start into a new series oozing with brithisness and characters who run deep.

This book is one of the most amazing books I've read. Feynman truly masters the theory of quantum electrodynamics with such clarity and engagement that you don't have to know physics to understand this masterpiece

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. Very simple explanation of the essence of "e to ix" to any one not exposed to math. I passed the book on to an uncle. Then I was sorry I did it as soon as I handed the book because I remembered it's now out of publication. In the end still happy to have an English teacher exposed to this book.
