Time Tested Actionable Steps to Guide You on Your Road to Success

"Just Believe" is an adaptation of the movie "The Lamp" the story of Stanley Walters. The first half of the book begins two years after a tragic accident has left Stanley traumatized. Bitterness and grief have overtaken Stanley. He descends into a deep depression which leaves him unable to focus on his writing career and is destroying his marriage.

A timely meeting with a man named Charles and a simple action message beginning with "just believing" lead to a series of events which restore purpose and meaning to Stanley's life. He returns to writing, his financial situation improves, and his marriage is healed.

Through unexpected meetings with Charles and other "Messengers" Stanley is introduced to ten key principles that lead to success. In the last half of the book Stanley himself becomes the "Messenger" as he shares these time tested actionable steps with the reader on an inspirational journey to success. I appreciate the fact that these steps appear in the table of contents available on the Amazon website.

Stovall and Trost bring into this collaboration a creative story and writing skills that touch the heart and inspire the reader with a message which can lead to life transformation.

Review of Just Believe

Jim Stovall is a gifted writer. He writes a story that keeps your interest to the very end. I couldn't lay it down. But the story is just the vehicle to deliver very useful life lessons. I read it first for the story, and a second time to get more insight into the points that he brings out. It is entertainment with a lesson. Very good!

Riffing off ideas articulated in Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey, Myth and the Movies serves both as a sequel to that book and a series of examples attempting to demonstrate its validity. In his book, Vogler, borrowing ideas from Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, argues that every story follows certain patterns--which he collectively characterizes as a mythic "hero's journey." In Myth and the Movies, Voytilla breaks this journey up into stages, using 50 famous films to illustrate the universality of Vogler's method. During the course of the book, he unpacks the mythic structure of horror, war, drama, romance, comedy, science fiction, action-adventure, the western, and the thriller, drawing on films as diverse as Seven Samurai, The Silence of the Lambs, Annie Hall, and Boyz N the Hood. His charts, maps, and consideration of various archetypal characters ("the shadow," "the trickster," "the herald," "the shapeshifter") and narrative devices ("the elixir," "the adventure," "the threshold," "the road back") provide a clear picture of how Campbell's archetypes can be used for film analysis. Interesting Genre analysis, Nominal story analysis,

After reading Vogler I was interested in how an expert might wholisticly apply his structure to actual movies.

Unfortunately, Voytilla's analysis of individual movies is rather shallow and nominal. i.e. He basically rehashes movie plots using keywords for Voglers book to name them. There is no introspection into how these elements provide drama, work with the theme of the movie, or highten an audience's investment in the hero.

The only parts of the book that I found interesting were Voytilla's analysis of Genres. Here he writes about similar structures, themes, and purposes found within genres such as comedy, adventure, action etc.

If you are at a loss to apply Vogler's works, this book will be helpful. If you are interested in breif and somewhat interesting Genre analysis and don't mind dropping a few bucks then you might pick up a couple of interesting tidbits here and there.

However, if you're looking for an analysis that truly enlightens the dynamics behind the dramatic excellence of a movie, skip this book, rent a bunch of movies and apply Vogler's ideas for yourself. (Disney movies such as the Little Mermaid are a great place to start.)

Worthy companion to Writer's Journey. Highly recommended!

Myth and the Movies puts meat on the substantial and influential bones of Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey by illustrating the mythic structure of 50 great films. Stuart Voytilla's selection of movies is imaginative and challenging, going beyond the obvious myth-based films to demonstrate mythic structure in the "real" world of story. Voytilla's commitment to this project is impressive. He covers all the genres -- action adventure, western, horror, thriller, war, drama, romance, romantic comedy, and science fiction/ fantasy. The book is invaluable for romance writers. By studying the sections on romance and romantic comedy they will undoubtedly gain a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between the Journey of the Heart and the Journey of the Higher Cause and -- perhaps more fundamentally -- the interplay between human emotion and the mythic structure itself. Using as examples Casablanca, The African Queen, La Strada, Beauty and the Beast, The Piano (for romance)and Bringing Up Baby, Singin' in the Rain, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, Annie Hall and Sleepless in Seattle (for romantic comedy), Voytilla heightens the romance writer's understanding of these all-important concepts. A worthy companion to The Writer's Journey. Highly recommended for film buffs, and screenwriters and novelists of all genres.

Interesting But Hardly Definitive

Anyone interested in screen writing can probably benefit from reading this book, and people interested in film in general may find it entertaining. After all, it discusses 50 popular films and it's always interesting to read what people have to say about films we've all enjoyed. In addition, it is well written.

This being said, the film suffers from the pretention (in the best sense) of analyzing film structure according to Joseph Campbell's mythology. In fact it is a dumbed down version of Vogler's (The Writer's Journey) analysis, which itself is somewhat dumbed down from Campbell. Don't think that you are reading Campbell's work when you are reading this book (which doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of good stuff in this book, only that it is not like reading the original source).

Early on it becomes apparent that Voytilla is stressing and straining to analyze film structure according to Campbell. The films are stretched to fit the theory, to the point where we have such strange conclusions as Voytilla's idea that Martin Pawley is the hero of "The Searchers" (someone tell that to John Wayne and John Ford).Or his whole treatment of "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" as if it was a science fiction film/article, when in fact it was a dark cautionary tale about suburban conformity in the 1950s (even if you take the literal appearance of the film, some reference has to be made to the hidden meaning as this changes completely the whole theme of the film).

Moreover, by choosing to illustrate his theory and looking only at 50 "unforgettable films", Voytilla begs the question. Better to compare 25 "unforgettable" films with 25 forgettable ones, and show that adherence to his theory is what makes the difference.

I'm not saying there isn't merit in looking at Campbell's work with respect to film (or literature for that matter). I firmly believe there is. I just didn't feel this book did justice to that endeavor.

In summary, I believe this is a fun and entertaining book, with appeal to screen writers and film enthusaists alike, but it shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Vivid vignettes of Indian life

In these short stories, in the vein of Mark Tully or Jhumpa Lahiri, Mahesh Rao creates vivid vignettes of Indian life. The superficialities of Bollywood, the corrupt yoga centre, the evangelical preacher, and the commercial galaxy around a soft drink business; the bitterness which drives a woman to denounce her rival’s son, wrestling cults, spoilt upper class brats, sexual attraction to a friend’s spouse or to a daughter-in-law, criminal feudal repression, the feeble teacher who becomes radicalised – these themes are treated with wry comment in Rao’s concise engaging style.

Mahesh Rao is a young Indian fictional writer of great talent. With points of humour, sarcasm and at times tenderness, he tells us the story of 13 people through various states and cities of India from the lady who works in Yoga center to an ex-Bollywood actor to a school teacher in Kashmir. All the stories are very human and touch upon many of our conditions, desperate, hopeful or otherwise. I highly recommend it.

This book is very detailed and colorful as is folk art. The pictures are very clear. The writing is concise and to the point. I like the book very much. My only problem with it is that I would rather have had it in a hard back edition so that I could display it on the table top near my folk art.

Great guide to one of the most interesting museums extant.

Have visited the museum 3 times - my sister lives in Santa Fe - and I have been captivated by the collection - moreso with each visit. I rank the museum with the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia - a fascinating collection that represents the singular vision of one person. This book does a great job but only touches on the surface of the most extensive collection of folk art in the universe (OK, that's a guess, but I bet I'm right). Get the book then get to SF and see the thing itself. You will be dazzled.

Not just for JA Fans

About half of this book can be read by a non JA lover and still find it interesting. The author does a very nice job of giving both an understandable explaination of food and customs of the period for even the non fans out there. But the latter chapters, which focus on themes of food and its relationship to the novels and the characters will leave the non-initiated a little harried. Having read all the novels also helps a great deal when she begins to break down character by character. The author also has some wonderful insights that literally made a light bulb go off in my head. So in the end if you are a JA fan read away, if you are not try reading half of it!

Interesting Book! Dining and HOW it was done and WHAT was consumed could be a Whole DIFFERENT affair back in 1810!

My, my how times have changed! Dining and food played quite a different role in the lives of the middle class and the wealthier classes during the Regency Era in England. What was served was important and how it was prepared and offered up on the dining room table had meaning back then. Food and food service was often very different from todays meals, especially when guests dined with families back in the early 1800's. It was also interesting to me how the timing of meals and of "tea" throughout the day could be of such importance. And also that well brought up young ladies like Lizzie and Emma, rarely had anything to do with food preparation. Their involvement with that primarily consisted of choosing the "menu" for the day and giving that information to the housekeeper or cook. In "P & P", Mrs. Bennett actually takes quite a bit of pride in the fact that HER daughters (unlike Charlotte Lucas) had nothing to do with "kitchen activities". Thus giving her daughters, like Lizzie and Jane, more social status because of their lack of involvement with food. I really enjoyed reading this book, as it was like a little window back in time that gave me a better idea of what daily life was like for women of this era. Life revolved so MUCH around dining correctly back then. It made me wonder what the Bennett family and Mr, Darcy would think of eating in todays world filled with fast food drive up windows! It also made me wonder what Regency era families would think of all the modern "Foodies" out there today who enjoy viewing programs like "The Chew" and who truly love to cook and to to roll up their sleeves and prepare healthy foods and gourmet meals. They would probably just shake their heads in wonder at that. A big "Thumbs Up" for this informative and entertaining book!

Gavin Henrick has worked with technology in business, learning and development for over 10 years. He has been consulting on using Moodle, Mahara and other open-source applications for the last 4 years. He has run several websites and runs his own blog (www.somerandomthoughts.com). He is a regular speaker at a number of Moodlemoots and conferences on the use of Moodle in the corporate space focusing on practical examples of usage. Gavin recently joined the the Moodle Partner Remote-Learner and is based out of Canada working with a range of organisations in Canada and Europe. Jeanne Cole is a Senior Project Manager for Remote-Learner US. She is an experienced Moodle course developer and project manager who has migrated hundreds of courses from other learning management systems to Moodle, as well as created courses from client materials. She also has experience managing projects applying multiple open source products to meet a wide variety of client needs. Prior to her Moodle career, Jeanne worked as a project engineer / manager for contractors in the US and UK. Jason Cole, Ph.D is the Chief Operating Officer for Remote-Learner, US, an official Moodle partner providing hosting, support and instructional design services. Jason oversees Remote-Learner's daily operations, providing technical services to over 1,100 clients, from small non-profit organizations to Fortune 500 companies. Jason started using Moodle at San Francisco State University in 2003 when he led the transition from Blackboard to Moodle. Later, he led the implementation of Moodle at the Open University in the UK, currently one of the top three largest Moodle deployments in the world. Over the ensuing 2 years he successfully architected a system that currently supports over 225,000 student users with multiple enrollments. Jason is the co-author of Using Moodle (c2006 & 2007) published by O'Reilly Community Press, and has been the organizer of several successful Moodle Conferences in the US and UK.

A valuable asset if you want to use Moodle in a commercial enterprise

Moodle 2.o for Business is part of the Packt Moodle series and is co-written by Jason and Jeanne Cole and Gavin Henrick. It's refreshingly different from the other Moodle books in that its focus is not on students in an educational institution learning, say geography; rather; it concentrates on another major global use of Moodle - commercial enterprise. It shows how a company, whatever size, can benefit from Moodle's features to improve its recruitment, training, staff development and internal communication processes. Written as a "Beginner's guide"; its language is accessible and, despite being collaboratively authored, it reads smoothly in a consistent style. (Hands up -I was one of the three technical reviewers of the book.)

Chapter 1 starts us off by suggesting ways to download Moodle to experiment/play with it before using it "in anger" - as the modern saying goes! We learn the very basics of course administration, adding resources and a discussion space. I particularly liked the "E-learning framework for implementing Moodle" section where we consider ADIME (Align/Develop/Implement/Measure/Evaluate) and also the case study at the end of the chapter. The inclusion of real-life case studies is an inspired Plus to this book, I believe, setting in a genuine context the features explored in the chapters and sharing Moodle experiences from the world of business.

Chapter 2 explains how potential employees can create new accounts (safely!) on your Moodle site and how the assignment module can be used to allow them to send in their CVs. Employers can use the assignment grading facility to rate the applications; the quiz module can serve as a means of administering competency tests and the choice module can help schedule interviews. This whole chapter appealed to my mindset because I love tweaking/adapting/manipulating Moodle to do what you need it to do, and here were whole scenarios I hadn't considered before.

Chapter 3 handles the need to provide product knowledge both internally and externally. (Incidentally, an added bonus for me reading this book was that not only did it give me some ideas about using Moodle for business, it actually also taught me about business!) We looked at different course formats, created a glossary f0r specific terminology, a chat session for role-playing and a database for peer reviewing created product knowledge sheets. Another case study at the end of the chapter gives, in this instance, AA Ireland the opportunity to pass on advice for businesses planning to implement Moodle.

Chapter 4 can be downloaded as a freebie taster! Its focus is how to use Moodle to deliver in-house staff training such as legal compliance or health and safety to selected groups of employees. Here, the authors take us through the Lesson module and explain how to put groups and groupings to good effect. Completion tracking, whereby employees can track their progress is also explained in this chapter, leading usefully on to the (new to Moodle 2.0) concept of course completion.

Chapter 5 is a very thorough explanation of the use of outcomes in Moodle - a feature I sometimes think is underused (but maybe that's just me?) Outcomes can help with competency tracking and the reader is shown how to add an outcome to an assignment and grade it. I actually learned something myself too - how to import outcomes via CSV- how cool is that?!

Chapter 6 discusses how to make the most of Moodle's features to support informal communities of practice. So we are talking forums, wikis and collaborative glossaries and databases. The reader also gets to learn about how enabling RSS feeds can improve communication

Chapter 7 is about web conferencing. Moodle doesn't have a built-in web conferencing tool so the authors discuss the various alternatives that can plug in to Moodle - one of them being Adobe Connect Pro (which I assume you have to pay for) and the other being Big Blue Button (which is free) I have experience of both of these and they are both very valuable additions to an online training program. Once more, at the end of the chapter, we have an informative case study - this time from Moodle Partner Remote Learner (for whom the authors work)

Chapter 8 concentrates on repositories and portfolios -ie, how, in Moodle 2.0, you can bring in content from external sources such as Google Docs or Alfresco and you can "push it out" to external sources such as Mahara. As I increasingly use Mahara myself, I can see it as an essential add- on to a commercial Moodle site - indeed, maybe the authors should consider writing Mahara for Business next?

Chapter 9 is about enrolment plugins (how best to get your users onto your Moodle, allowing them to keep their existing corporate usernames and passwords. It also touches on themes as having an attractive corporate image on your Moodle site is essential - themes in Moodle 2.0 are much enhanced and easily customisable. Finally, and just as important, we learn how to change the words on Moodle. By default, Moodle uses terms such as "teacher", "student" and "course" as its origins are based in the educational environment - but it is a simple move to alter these to language more suited to your own organisation.

In summary -if you are thinking of using Moodle in a commercial enteprise, then this is an extremely valuable book :) On a personal level, I enjoyed it because it shows Moodle being used differently from the norm I am familiar with, so it was an inspiring read :)

Co-authors Jason Cole, PhD, Chief Operating Officer for Remote-Learner US, and his wife, Jeanne Cole, a Senior Project Manager also working for Remote-Learner US. Mr. & Mrs. Cole both have an extended background in learning management systems, Moodle administration, course development, and project management. Gavin Henrick, the third author, has a 10-year background in business, learning, and development. He recently joined Moodle Partner Remote-Learner, and is responsible for organizations in Europe and Canada.

Chapter One introduces statistical data, the comparison between other LMS and positive arguments on why to choose Moodle, and open source learning is outlined to the point that the reader will understand what it is all about. For someone new to and with little knowledge on what Moodle represents, the introduction to Moodle and its history is a very useful section.
The extended explanation on how to install a demo Moodle on a laptop is well written and organized with many helpful screenshots and hints. A detailed course creation section follows, explaining how to add and utilize most all elements available to create a resource-rich and meaningful site. It then explains how to add resources and other elements relevant for a Moodle business site. Moreover, the chronological order and the "how to" screen shots assure the reader that he will not get lost in the process. The case study introduces the reader to real life business problems and how to approach a solution using Moodle. The outlined question and answer model used in the case study is easy to understand, and animates the reader to think outside the box.

The next chapter deals with one of the most important subjects in business. It introduces the reader to setting up the Moodle for use as a hiring, interviewing, training and testing tool for new employees. Getting the insight on how to set up a quiz module and question bank is just one tool Moodle can be used in business. The chapter is well organized and easy to follow. The comprehensive screen shots and hands-on explanations are well documented and trouble-free to understand. Again, the case study at the end of the chapter will guide the reader in the direction of evaluating the process and adding and/or eliminating information relevant to the development.

In Chapter Three, the reader will learn how to create a course, add course content, add and edit topics, add labels and objectives, work with summaries, and create terminology glossaries. The reader will be guided step by step in the process of successfully creating a course relevant for its targeted audience.

Using Moodle to manage compliance training is the topic of Chapter Four. Since it is of utmost importance that employees and trainees comply with rules and regulations, this chapter deals with how to effectively guide the participant through the learning module, track student data, and use data to supplement subject knowledge further.

Chapter Five deals with how to relate outcome to track competency within Moodle. As it is true for schools, the same is true for business; knowledge and proficiency are important to assess student/employee.

Chapter Six touches on "best practice" communities and the importance of problem solving within a group of like-minded people, utilizing communities of practice within an organization, and setting up such groups in Moodle. For example, chats, blogs and Wikis are options of a subject group to communicate amongst each other. The reader also will be introduced to the usefulness of, and how to choose RSS feeds.

Chapter Seven touches on the background of web conferencing and where to find forums on the subject. Since Moodle doesn't come with an incorporated web conferencing tool, the book discusses in detail plug-ins suitable for use in Moodle to establish web conferencing. It also lists the URL to a plug-in database. Elluminate Live and BigBlueButton , as well as Adobe Connect Pro and OpenMeetings are listed there.

Chapter Eight deals with outside components and repositories, such as Google Docs, Mahara and Alfresco. It guides the learner through the process on how to add and use them successfully within Moodle.

The last chapter addresses enrollment methods, such as internal or external enrollment, and authentication plug-ins. There are easy to understand examples on how to employ them. Each chapter is well organized, and extensive insight information is added to give the reader the confidence to master all elements addressed in the guide. Furthermore, Moodle 2.0 for Business -Beginners Guide is written in a way that is easy to understand; it's not only written for the beginner, advanced learners can benefit from to it as well. It fully explains all of its unlimited uses.
The comprehensive summery section helps the reader to reinforce the material covered. The elaborate stream of information, screen shots, and help sections are detail oriented. The easy-to-understand explanations will guide the reader successfully through the process of setting up and utilizing Moodle and its potential to its fullest. The case studies in each chapter are a welcome tool to check if the actions taken are compatible with specific goals.
The "What just happened" header is a very helpful tool to think back on the completed task. Anyone in the process of setting up a Moodle site for any business will be pleased to have found a step-by-step guide for the entire process. Lastly, the multitude of business related information is a further useful learning tool for any reader.

In conclusion, the Moodle 2.0 for Business - Beginners Guide is a priceless resource for any company who would like to explore the opportunity to setup, run, and administer its very own Moodle site.

Good book for corporate users of Moodle 2.0

Moodle users in the business sector will particularly benefit from reading this book. The text assumes no knowledge of the Moodle learning management system software, so it does start with the very basics. It then moves into more creative and complex applications of Moodle for business purposes. Topics covered include staff recruitment, product rollouts, compliance training, continual professional development, communities of practice, web conferencing and system integrations. The depth and breadth of coverage is excellent and there are several real world business case studies, also.
